DescriptionIn 1977, America was hooked on oil—burning through it fast and relying heavily on foreign suppliers. With gas prices rising and shortages looming, President Jimmy Carter called it the “moral equivalent of war” and rolled out a sweeping energy plan. He wanted to cut oil use, tax oil company profits, push conservation, and invest in alternatives like coal, solar, and nuclear energy.But once his plan hit Congress, the wheels started to come off. Oil-state Democrats, Republicans, and powerful industry lobbyists all pushed back hard. And even environmentalists, who supported conservation, objected to Carter’s promotion of coal and nuclear energy, worrying about pollution, strip mining, and reactor safety. The result? Months of wrangling and a watered-down energy bill that left no one fully satisfied. Carter had the right instincts, but between politics and competing interests, his big energy fix ended up more like a patch job. Social/Sharing |

A history lesson we often forget seeing how those times led to more innovation in energy conservation, more efficient cars, and lessened dependence on foreign oil and oil itself.

yep... I believe avg milage in the '70s was around 13 mpg, we're probably well over 26 mpg today for the reasons you mention.
