Description

Barry asked his Facebook group which Legionnaire should be the subject of the "B" piece, and his fans really rose to the task. There were lots of votes for both Brainy (who of course got my vote) and Bouncing Boy, and a vote or two for Blok, but in the end I opened Facebook a few days later to find this amazing piece starting back at me: my favourite character painted by my favourite artist. Cue the world's fastest Facebook message to check if it was still available to be claimed, and it was!

Like Andromeda before him, I'm not sure I've ever seen Barry draw this version of Brainy before. Where the A for Andromeda piece has fully inked linework, this one barely has any inks at all! Most of the outlines you see are done entirely in watercolour, which gives this piece a very organic, smooth impression. I especially love just how many colours went into getting Brainy's skintone exactly right. Barry gave him the perfect expression, too - calm, calculating, and maybe the tiniest bit smug. As always, I'm a sucker for a good space background, and this one is even more unique because it's orange! I like that the orange background here and the green background on the Andromeda piece sort of link the two together - they look very good side by side. And it might be a little hard to spot the "B" Barry included at first glance, but it's in the upper right corner. I think he either brushed some water or some watered down white paint over the background in order to make it stand out just a little bit.

Well B would HAVE to be Brainiac but I respect those other votes out there too ha. So you're 2 for 2 so far! Did you get the entire alphabet Margaret? ;-p

That space background is so so nice, and the committment to the watercolor throughout even for darker solid lines really makes the figure pop as well! For your favorite character this is a real standout piece, congrats!

Thanks, Kavi!! Even having seen the whole alphabet now, this is still one of my favourites! And no, I didn't buy the whole alphabet. ;)

(But I did buy half!).
