DescriptionJ was a tricky letter to brainstorm Legionnaires for! Codename-wise, there were obscure characters Jagged and Jewel. Name-wise, there were a few more options, with Jenni Ognats (XS), Jo Nah (Ultra Boy), and Jacques Foccart (Invisible Kid II). The J option that got the most votes (including mine) was a sort of combination of the two, with "Jeckie" being the nickname for one Princess Projectra. I remember eagerly waiting for this piece to be posted, because I didn't have a Jeckie in my collection yet, so I was hoping to pounce on this one. I figured Barry might have gone with the Threeboot version of Projectra, which he designed, but instead he chose her iconic Cockrum/Grell look from the 70s and 80s! According to Barry, he'd never drawn Jeckie in this costume before, which I find incredible since it seems to be a bit of a fan-favourite. I know I'm sure happy with this one!I love how brightly the colours of her costume pop against the background, and the little details Barry added to show the eyelets where the cords tying her costume closed feed into the fabric (because God knows that costume needs all the structural support it can get!). Compared to Dream Girl's hair in the D piece, which Barry kept entirely white, I love the inkwork and shading he gave to Jeckie's hair here. There's a little bit of Barry's trademark multidirectional hatching to shade her cape, too, which is fun! And I can't even begin to fathom how Barry made the background for this one. The soft glowing effect is just incredible, and Barry played with the saturation of the bright specks to create a sense of depth, like Jeckie's surrounded in a shimmery mist. It's not quite a space background, but all the little bright speckles lend it a more mystical feel, with is appropriate for her mystic illusion powers. Social/Sharing |

A lovely and tasteful addition to the Kitson Legion Alphabet series collection! I really like the subtle changes in hue throughout for her skin tone, and that background is really well done. Jeckie/Projectra has an almost playful look about her, but none of the elements seem over the top.

All fantastic insights, Kavi! The gradual shifts in skintone shading are definitely really well done.

With that logic, I'm hanging on by a string here and so is Jeckie.

Don't let her string you along, Marcus! She's already spoken for!

Structural support indeed! Grell and Cockrum transformed the Silver Age teen characters with new designed inspired by 1970s bathing suits. Even the guys like Tyroc and Cosmic Boy were baring their chests and abs.

I've heard that period of Legion costume history referred to as the "Great Fabric Shortage of the 2970s"! I'm sure the Legionnaires were just doing their part for the galactic economy by reducing the amount of fabric their costumes used. ;)

A few years back, I was trying to decide which legionnaire to get Mike Grell to draw for a commission so I asked him which one of the female ones he liked to draw. His response was that Dawnstar was his baby so she's special. But Jackie would be the that he would always draw with her costiume cut so low, there's no doubt she had a Brazilian. Choice made for me 😇

Oh, that's hilarious! And it reminds me, someone in Barry's FB group commented on this piece and said something along the lines of "I don't know much about Orandan anatomy, but shouldn't that costume be revealing some scandalous bits?". Barry replied "She is the mistress of illusions" with a winky face. So I guess the takeaway from our two stories is that Jeckie's costume is exactly as revealing as she wants it to be, which is very.

Great series by Barry. Congrats on your pickups from it! This is probably my favorite of the three.

Thanks, Greg! I have a hard time picking my favourite, honestly. But Jeckie here was one of Barry's best from the series, I think!
