Barry Kitson's Legion Alphabet - U for Ultra Boy

DescriptionThere weren't many suggestions tossed out for the "U" character, probably because it was almost a foregone conclusion that it would be Ultra Boy (especially since Umbra is a variant of Shadow Lass, who had just been done for "S")!I didn't have strong plans to pick up the "U" piece, but I kept an eye out for it anyways, and I'm glad I did! Here's one more beautiful space background as we turn into the home stretch of the alphabet. Even though superficially it's blue and green like the background for Rond Vidar, this one is a much deeper, purer blue - less teal - and the green is fully concentrated on making the "U". I like the glowing, feathery effect Barry gave it! It can be a little tricky to tell which version of Ultra Boy this is, since he's had very similar costumes throughout the various Legion incarnations, but the black portion of his costume, which runs in stripes down the arms and stops partway down the green symbol, gives it away - this is Ultra Boy from the Legion's first reboot (the "Archie" or "Legionnaires" Legion, if you will). I love how Barry painted him with strong, solid colours - stocky and bold, like the man himself. I especially enjoy the use of black to shade his hair, too. But, my favourite part of the piece has to be the expression Barry gave him! Jo is usually portrayed as a tough-talking, bullheaded "bad boy", but Barry made him look so sweet here, you just know that he's looking past the viewer at his girlfriend, Apparition, who's surely floating in space alongside him. This one turned out nice too! Def not surprised to see Ultra Boy pop up as the character choice for the letter U as you pointed out.! I love that green U within the cosmic/space background as well as the different hues he used to enhance that background. The Ultra Boy figure is done really well and I like the earnest look Kitson did on his face. With only 5 letters left in the alphabet after this I'm wondering what could be next!

It's definitely not something I'd normally do! It's just so hard to come across any of Barry's Legion art to add to my collection, so I wanted to take the chance when the opportunity actually presented itself. I finally feel like I have a substantial amount of Barry's art in my collection, which I'm really thankful for. :)
