DescriptionWhen it was time to pick a "V" character, it was essentially a unanimous request for Shrinking Violet over on Barry's Facebook page, but I don't think anyone was expecting Barry to get so creative with the composition for this one!I remember seeing it for the first time and just being absolutely floored by how beautiful it was, too. I think the background was what jumped out at me first, which sounds a little funny, but there's something about the soft mauve and blue that really sets this one apart from any of the other alphabet pieces. I like the idea that the background is a little out of focus because the "camera" is focused on Vi, and she's so tiny here. I think this was probably Barry's cleverest way of incorporating a letter into an alphabet piece. Having the "L" of the Legion flight ring double as a "V" from the right perspective is absolutely, positively brilliant. It's pretty neat to have a piece with the flight ring featured so prominently, too. And I love all the detail Barry was able to put into Vi, even when she's such a small figure and he's working with watercolours. I love how clear and defined her face is, with a very distinct expression even when it's done on such a small scale, and also how he painted the folds in her uniform perfectly even with minimal linework to define them. This is Vi in her Silver Age uniform, from a time when she was very shy and timid, but I like her pleased, proud expression here. I have to wonder if she's only showing off the flight ring, or if she's specifically showing off how you can use it to make a "V" for Violet. Social/Sharing |

Not an unexpected pick for "V" but an unexpected approach to the illustration nonetheless! I really love that he utilized the L in the Legion flight ring to also double as a "V" in the spirt of the piece with Shrinking Violet showcasing it in a classic Silver Age look/pose. A great piece, congrats!

A "V" or an "L", it's another checkmark in your Kitson Alphabet Legion collection.
