Description

Here's a lovely if somber drawing by Jon Muth. The story I heard was that he asked 3 students in a drawing class to make a mark each on a blank page and he then composed this image under the constraint of the lines he was provided. Whether that's true or not, I love the mood he achieved and the facial type is very representative of his art. Such loose, but beautifully controlled lines; so much variation. Great hair design, and the posture is as evocative as the downturned gaze.

A tip of the hat to Kevin for a smooth transaction!

Thanks for taking a look!

I've been a fan of Muth since discovering his first Moonshadow series and Dracula graphic novel back in the mid eighties.  I've also heard of this single mark lesson.  Not specifically with Muth, but with art teachers in general.  I wish there was some sort of in progress video of this piece starting with the student's marks.  It would've been fun and interesting to see how the piece began and evolved.  By the way, I believe Jay spells his name JON, not John.

Yes, Muth's Dracula was terrific!  Moonshadow is memorable as well.  Thanks for the comment, and the spelling correction

Pretty nice with the simplicity allowing for the loose natural lines to emerge.  Most likely to teach a lesson on perception and observation as to what line would emerge from the information gleaned by the students.

A bust is traditionally "shoulders up" this goes down to the waist and even begins to indicate the legs, so calling it a bust is selling it short. Nevertheless, it's a simple yet lovely nude by Muth.

Yes, correct on both counts --- I've updated the description accordingly.
