DescriptionFrom Cape & Cowl Con 2025, a wonderful “UP!” drawing by Ben Su.
Benjamin Su is a Pixar animator by day, and a freelance Marvel cover artist by night. He is also a toy designer for Abominable Toys and in his spare time teaches an art class for kids in his community (apparently Ben doesn’t have enough to do). Ben was an animator on numerous Pixar films including Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Brave, Inside Out, Finding Dory, Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Onward, Soul, Turning Red, Inside Out 2, Elio, and more. He was the Directing Animator for the film Elemental. Ben is also a big OA fan and collector, so we have that in common as well. The best part for me is that he lives here in town and I am privileged to call him a friend. Strangely enough, “UP!” is not on Ben’s list of credits. But when he showed me his portfolio at the show, this was the one piece that jumped out at me. He had other Pixar pieces in similar price and size. But this delightful color drawing of Dug and Carl really caught my eye. At this point, I think Ben is hanging on to most of his Marvel covers, so it’s just nice to have some actual artwork by (and from) him. Hopefully as his cover art begins to pile up, me may decide to let a few go. Until then, I guess we all just have to bide our time. Though from what I understand, you might have to fight his daughter for them. I think she’s got first dibs on all her father’s Marvel art. LOL! Anyway, my thanks to Ben for this delightfully fun piece from one of my favorite PIxar movies (and thanks for dropping it off at the house yesterday). Thanks also for sharing your talent and your friendship. You can follow Ben on his Instagram, “bensuart”. Contact kwanchang.com for his official representation. And you can see his Chomp toy line at Abominabletoys.com Oh, shout outs to Derek and TAMD1. It was nice meeting you at the show. Sorry I couldn’t stay longer to chat. And Anthony, it was nice catching up with you for a bit. Good luck in November. For those of you stopping by to take a peek, I appreciate your time. Let the squirrel comments begin! Social/Sharing |

A nice fun piece inspired by arguably Pixar's best movie! Sorry to hear you got sick but looks like the 1 hour drop by of the show was worth it for this piece and quick meet ups with fellow community members. Hopefully you felt/feel better soon!

Even though I have a favorites list and a Top 5/10 list for just about everything else, I actually have never bothered to do a list of my favorite Pixar films. But even without it, I can say unequivocally that the opening montage of Carl and Ellie's story is one of the most beautiful, powerful, and emotional, sequences I have ever seen in any animated film or any film period. Thanks for the comment and the well wishes. Definitely feeling better today.

Oh wow I love this so much! Carl's expression is priceless. And what better way to show the unconditional love that dogs have for us unworthy humans. Great grab!

Up represents a golden age in Pixar films. They always found a way to make your cry and it was fun trying to figure out how they were going to do it from the trailer. Who knew a grumpy old man would have such a moving story arc? Cape & Cowl Con rules! The vibe of this comic con contrasted with the one a weekend before is 180 degrees.

I think that's a valid point and I would have to agree with you. For me, the difference in the Carl & Ellie opening sequence is how beautifully it was crafted. The storytelling, the imagery, the music, all combined for a truly profound emotional impact. It didn't feel so manufactured like a lot of obvious movie ploys that try so hard to make you shed a tear.
As for that "other" con the weekend before, I was there too (and I know you were there last year). For a "major" convention that holds events in several big cities, it could learn a thing or two from C&C. Granted they have the advantage of a brewery and free admission, but still. Hopefull Galaxy is headed in the right direction and can build in the coming years.

That place can be a good comic art fans meet up spot.

Wpw! Very cool illustration by Ben SU of my favorite charaters from UP! I really loved that movie. In fact, I think the first 20 minutes of UP! is the best animated movie ever, regardless of the rest of the film. The storytelling of Carl and Ellie's life together was so full of love and heartbreak and devotion that it literally brought me to tears. Ben's illustration captures Carl perfectly, with his grumpy exterior but heart of gold. Ever consider getting Ben to draw a portrait of Carl and Ellie together? Fantastic art, great addition to you world-class collection.
