Description

Keeping DC western themed...Bat Lash, will he save the west or ruin it.

Bat Lash was a beautifully drawn, well liked but short lived series from 1968.  The series was written and plotted by Sergio Aragonés with Denny O'Neil doing the dialog and Nick Cardy providing the art. The stories were fun and the art was gorgeous. Bat Lash being a bit of a ladies man, Cardy was able to draw women in every issue and his women were beautiful.

Bat Lash art is hard to come by. After his short lived series, only lasting 7 issues, he didn't make much appearances. It's always a treat when he shows up somewhere especially on covers! I've manged to get few over the years. Here is the cover to Bat Lash #5 from his original series. Weird Western Tales #45 uses his famous tagline. A cool all western issue of Justice League Unlimited #19 and of course the Justice League Europe Annual #2 where he is in the classic Kevin Maguire group shot! Now I get to add this beautifully inked cover by Kevin Nowlan. Kevin did a fantastic job, the inks are subtle and compliment the pencils to a tee.

This is the trade paperback cover that collected the 2008 Bat Lash six issue miniseries from DC comics. It is Kevin Nowlan inks over bluelined NIck Cardy pencils. To put it in Kevin's own words "Nick Cardy was one of my favorite artists when I was growing up in the '60's. From Teen Titans, through Brave and the Bold, Aquaman and the series that I would consider his masterpiece, Bat Lash.
He's a gifted storyteller on paper and in person and this was the one time we got to work together; a cover for the trade paperback collection of the 2008 series. Nick wanted to hang on to his pencils if possible so I told him I'd be more than happy to ink a blueline print and return his pencils to him untouched. He drew the cover so tight that my inks weren't really needed, but it was a genuine thrill to do this job so I'm glad that DC didn't feel the same way."- Kevin Nowlan

I've added a scan of the pencils (which I Do Not own) and a print that I got from Anthony's Comic Book Art which he says came from the Cardy estate.

Bat Lash: Guns and Roses Tpb cover inks by artist Kevin Nowlan over bluelined NIck Cardy pencils. On a 11X17 board. 2008

So cool to see this piece surface. I think Nick sold the pencils a few years before he passed. Nick usually inked his own pencils and they weren't tight. So it's just weird to have anybody ink him. I think the only other time was when Joe Staton inked Nick for a cover of TwoMorrows' Comic Book Artist magazine.

Dave Gibbons also bluelined inked a 2000 Nick Cardy Teen Titans cover.

One day I would love to own the pencils to this. That would be a dream.

Thanks for the reminder !!  Without looking it up, I think those pencils were looser and Gibbons inked it with the original costume ??

And I was mistaken about that Comic Book Artist credit. I think it was Scott Hanna that inked Nick. Nick had included Joe Staton's E-Man on that cover.

Bill Lash art is pretty rare!  Batlash maybe just as rare.  The Cardy pencils could have been fit for publication by itself, but there's no one else I'd rather see ink this than Nowlan.

I notice he didn't Nowlanize the pencils as much as he usually does, but that was on purpose out of respect to Cardy so the finished product would still look more like Cardy's work. A great looking cover featuring a really fun character!
