Birthday art – Part one.

Happy Labor Day to everyone, first of all. Hope you are all too busy enjoying your long holiday weekend to read this! LOL!

Anyway, as usual with my birthday every year, the last art deal that occurs before that date becomes my official birthday gift to myself. This year, I mailed off two checks simultaneously, but one was sent to southern California and was cashed almost immediately, while the other went to my boy Wade Furlong in Iowa (who seemed to take his sweet time cashing it). As such, the batch of art that I purchased from him (3 pieces all together) gets that designation for this year.

Unfortunately, my scanner is down at the moment, and his scanning resources were also unavailable to him before he shipped off the artwork. The only image I had at my disposal was this one, which I swiped off his CAF (heh-heh, thanks buddy). As soon as I have my scanner going again, I’ll try and replace this with a bigger image, so in time this portion can be disregarded. Of course that also means that I don’t know when the other two pieces from this deal will be posted. So definitely stay tuned, but don’t hold your breath. One thing is for sure, they’ll be worth the wait.

This deal originated a few weeks before San Diego. Wade emailed and asked me to check out his CAF to see if there was anything I might be interested in buying, as he needed to raise a bit of cash. I browsed his gallery and saw several interesting prospects, but this Gaijin Varmint piece really stood out for me. When I looked at the sale status, I was happy to see the word OFFERS on it. Not wanting to waste each other’s time, I asked him to just name his price. I was surprised when he replied that he really didn’t want to sell the piece. Part of me understood where he was coming from, as I thought it was a pretty spectacular drawing. At the same time, I was a bit confused as to why he had it listed for OFFERS. Anyway, we went back and forth on it and he finally decided to let it go in a package deal we eventually worked out.

Anyway, this is one of my very favorite works I’ve seen from Wade so far. It measures about 9x12, all pen & ink, and is dated 2007. I really love the linework on this! Gorgeous detailing and fabulous hatch work. Very cool pose, and great job on the hair/fur (and the face too). As I said, really one of my favorites by this amazingly talented young man.
