DescriptionIn my opinion, Alex Raymond was at his very best from 1938 through 1939. This is one of my two favorite Flash Gordon Sunday originals. The large image of Flash at the bottom was used as the cover of the first Nostalgia Press reprint volume. I might never have owned a copy of that book if not for the fact that my family once made a rare Sunday visit to Collectors Book Store in Hollywood, California. This was during the short period when Collectors was going under the name of Bennet's Books due to the fact that a decision had been made to sell mainstream books in addition to comics and movie memorabilia.. I was, as always, all excited over the prospect of buying some high grade Golden Age comics only to have my expectations dashed by some clerk who informed us that Leonard Brown, one of the owners of the store, was not in and that I couldn't purchase any comics since it was illegal to sell used comic books in California on a Sunday -- just another one of Leonard's famous tall tales concocted to keep young collectors with little money from wasting his time! In any event, I just had to get something out of the visit so I bought a copy of this Flash Gordon book (brand new and therefore totally legal) as, in my opinion at the time, a very second rate substitute for an old comic. At that time, around 1968, the most expensive comic book cost about $300 while a Flash Gordon original by Raymond would set you back at least $2,500 - $3,500. After seeing the art in the Nostalgia Press reprint book, I began to long for the Sunday page from which the cover image was taken, along with my main desire, a copy of Superman No. 1. It only took me about a year after that to get my Superman No. 1, but I waited 25 years until I finally got the Flash Gordon Sunday page of my dreams. The Superman No. 1 is long gone - sold at Sotheby's to raise money for original art, but the Flash Gordon Sunday is, to this day, one of my top three favorite possessions. There is a fairly famous Peanuts strip [Sunday, 28 July 1963] in which Lucy argues to Schroeder that Beethoven can't be that important since he was never the subject of a bubble gum card. When I saw an image of Flash Gordon Candy (close enough - it looks just like a gum card pack) in an original box, I knew that I was right all along in considering this one of the best of all Flash Gordon Sundays! This is the one piece in my collection which I bought as the result of an off-hand comment by my mother. When it was offered in one of Russ Cochran's auction catalogues, I didn't think that I had any chance of being the successful bidder on such a great Flash Gordon Sunday. There was another, 1938 Flash in the same sale, so I decided to go after the decidedly inferior piece. It just so happened that I had an appointment close to my parent's house during the early bidding hours, and I stopped in to see my mother before returning to Los Angeles, where I had been living. I took the Cochran catalogue into the house, intending to bid on the other Flash Gordon. Before calling to bid, I showed my mother what I was intending to buy. It and this Flash were on opposite pages of the catalogue. My mother looked where I was pointing, but then she pointed to the image of this Flash and said, "I like this one better." That was all it took; I called Russ and bid on both, knowing that I would likely get outbid on the one I really wanted but giving it a shot based on my mother's recommendation. Continued... What a wonderful Sunday -- and a rarity -- one of the few that Raymond did that he did not sign!

Epic. I have so many other obvious things I could say about it...but 'epic' pretty much sums it up.

Sublime inking. There's reasons why Frazetta looked up to Raymond!
