Description

This Sunday page (February 25, 1917) is one of the earlest examples of Herriman's inventive use of a diagonal composition. Herriman's unique wording and layouts for the panel numbers are also rather amazing in their unconventionality.

Herriman's work is often more impressive in terms of its art rather than the story. And, like Walt Kelly, it is often a bit of a chore to read the artist's dialogue. But I actually like the story of this Sunday page, which involves Ignatz' purchase of the ultimate brick {Brick De Luxe] from Kolin Kelly and then trying to follow the shortest path to deliver that brick to Krazy's head. As one would expect, things do not work out for poor Ignatz; he speeds down a hill in the wrong direction and ends up stranded in the lake (or is it the ocean?) which is seen in the earliest KK Sunday pages, as identified by a distinctive light house.

If another collector counted correctly in connection with his January 1917 Kat, this would be the 45th Herriman Krazy Kat, i.e., within the first year of the strip. The earliest Sunday pages are larger than the strips from 1918 and 1919.

This is amazing. How can this only have one comment!? (I assume it's because this was posted rather early in the history of CAF). Your collection is increadible, but these Krazy Kats are spectacular. I've also enjoyed reading your detailed stories about the pieces and how you acquired them. Thank you for putting this history out there.
