DescriptionContinuing from last week’s trend, another Japan themed post this time from legendary character designer Junichi Hayama.Hayama sensei is most known for his involvements in the super cultish franchises of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star. He was character designer, storyboarder and animation director on the Jojo OAV series of the 90s adapting the famous Stardust Crusaders arc that everyone was CRAZY about back when and whose super cult status remains extremely high (think Proya’s the Crow). He basically lifted that project on his shoulders. He is also best known for his incredible brush work/sketches. I won this probably more than 20 years ago when it was put for sale by someone in the organising committee of an anime themed US convention that invited the artist. At the time, finding any published or unpublished Manga/anime art was nearly impossible. That has very slightly changed over the years due to the effect of globalisation (to put it short) as Hayama has travelled a lot but it still remains a hard hustle as demand is huge while supply is not. Such a piece was so rare back when that when one was doing a Hayama Jojo art search in google, that was basically one of the 2 examples always popping up. It was everywhere, on blogs, fan galleries and sites, etc… :) The art speaks for itself, the essential badass Jotaro which looks perfect with just a very few brush strokes. Exceptional in its deceiving simplicity and masterful execution. I love that he included both sides of the jacket’s colar without any connecting line. This goes perfectly in hand with my sketches by Hirohiko Araki sensei, the creator of all things Jojo: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=372406 ORA ORA ORAAAAA ! Strikes me as reminiscent of Corto Maltese art, even as I am familiar with JOJO. Congrats!

Exactly! My first thought was, "What's he talking about? Corto Maltese isn't Japanese!". It's really great to see how only a few simple brush strokes can come together to form such a complete picture.

Sweet score, man. The depth of your collection (and knowledge!) continues to impress and delight! :) I really like the harsh and angular lines; it feels very Frank Miller 'Sin City' to me. Congrats on another heaping dollop of rare manga goodness!

The eyes and the eyebrows give this a steely look of stoic, yet heroic handsomeness as the creator intended for Jotaro.

As someone unfamiliar with anime stories or artists, I agree wholeheartedly the art speaks for itself. Fabulous art!

Superb pickup. I flip back and forth in my reading habits between western comics and eastern manga. Right now I'm manga full speed ahead.
