Description

I was going through my storage unit and found this caricature of myself given to me by my art teacher Mr. Frank Miller. (Not that one.) during my high school years I really loved drawing and actually thought about going into the field after school. Mr. Miller was what you wanted in an art teacher. he really loved the art history and would tell us stories during class while we worked. He was also very versed in Egyptology and would also tell us about the Different dynasties to give us inspiration to stretch our minds and think out of the box when we started a new project. His class was the highlight of the school day. He really inspirited me and it showed in my work. He would also spend extra time with me and discuss what I was working on and different ways to approach it. you couldn't ask more from your teacher. I remember working on a fully painted cover recreation of the Kiss Destroyer album as a yes, I was a card carry kiss army member) the pencils took about a week to do but when it came to the painting part, I was worried. Painting in oils was terrifying to me. he stayed after class and just gave me a little nudge when I was faltering or lacked confidence. but was always encouraging. when the project was done it won a prize and was displayed in the main hallway of the school for the month. I don't know who was prouder me or him. as the year finished, he made a caricature of each student as a present. mine was of me as a monk because I would come to class and just work on my assignment. I have kept this framed since and have now put it up on my art wall with all the great comic artists. thank you, Mr. Miller for all you did and making drawing fun. I have actually started sketching again for fun recently. I hope all students get as good as an art teacher and person as I did with Mr. Miller.

What agreat memento, Brian! It has to be a really special feeling when you're fortunate enough to have had a teacher that cared enough about you as much asa person as as they did of you as a student, to the point that they left a very lasting mark on you that you fondly remember them for the rest of your life. Were I in this situation, this piece would have more sentiment and meaning to me than any piece of comic art in my collection. Congrats on having had that experience and for having kept this caricature all of these years!

I loved this piece when he gave it to me. It did really capture the person I was then.

What a wonderful precious memory-filled account. It absolutely nails it in articulating what a difference it can make having an inspirational teacher. I can definitely relate to your history with your art teacher. Mine was called Mr Brown. Because of all my formal education I am sure he was disappointed that I never “made it” in the world of art and design, but he never showed it, and whenever we met he was always “bigging me up” and encouraging me. He lost his wife of over five decades in recent years but he puts a brave face on, which is the British way. I was half expecting your reminiscence to have a sad ending but was greatly relieved that it did not. You do realise that you are going to have to call Mr Miller up and ask him how he is in the next week or so? I am sure he would appreciate it.
