My page of choice from the sale of the original inked (but unlettered) art for the originally planned, never published, Nightwing #30 has arrived!

For those unaware of goings on in the recent “Forever Evil” event, Nightwing was captured by the Crime Syndicate (think “evil JLA”) and unmasked as Dick Grayson on live television. He was also believed dead at the end of the event (Hint: He wasn’t really….)

The originally planned story for Nightwing #30 was scrapped to give the writers of the new “Grayson” series a running start, and what we got was page after page of Bruce and Dick punching the hell out of each other in the Batcave because… well, reasons I’m sure. What we would have had is a story about the effect that the death of Dick Grayson on those who knew him.

I made my selection from the art when there was plenty to choose from (which wasn’t a situation that lasted long) so I had to choose carefully (and quickly). Some I couldn’t afford, so they were right out, and I was very tempted by the page of Dick and Kory, both naked in bed together, which was gorgeous and sexy and lovely… but my eye kept being drawn back to this page.

The pages before this are of Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock talking in a bar, the pages suggest they’re remembering the former Robin turned Nightwing and everything he had done for Batman and the city of Gotham. They then move to the top of the GCPD and switch on their own unique tribute to the lost crimefighter. For one night, the Bat-Signal will be a Night-Signal.

I sadly doubt that Dick’s career as a police officer in Bludhaven survived the recent reboot (And what a loss that we never saw Jim Gordon talking to Dick about being an honest cop in a corrupt city, when Dick was dating Jim’s faughter no less, but that’s another topic), but I just love the idea that the Police in Gotham respected Nightwing’s contribution to crimefighting and chose to honour him.
