DescriptionI loved these Marvel magazine as a kid and a HUGE reason why is the book this page came from (along with the amazing covers, the cool inside cover pin-ups on Rampaging Hulk, Thor, Conan and other Marvel Preview issues). Starlord spoke to me and this writer/ artist team meshed incredibly well right out of box. Their synergy was unmistakable. This page in particular (I believe) Claremont used inspiration out of the movie 'Swashbuckler' with Robert Shaw (July 1976). I loved the movie as a 12 year old and loved the creepy throw away villain in 1977. So for some this may be a sub par page missing the book's star but for me it is magic filled memories. Here is what CL has to say: This 1977 page from the second Star-Lord story ever is the first time that John Byrne and Terry Austin ever worked together! In the history of comic books, there are few art duos that have had as much impact on the hobby as Byrne on pencils and Austin on inks. Following their work on the story featuring this page, which appeared in Marvel Preview #11 (Summer, 1977), the team began to work together on X-Men starting with #108 (December 1977). Working with writer Chris Claremont, Byrne and Austin produced a series of stories over the next few years that many fans consider to be the best mainstream comic books ever produced. Austin's slick line was the ideal complement to Byrne's powerful pencil work. The team's work on such stories as "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Days of Future Past" has become legendary. As mentioned this page comes from just the second Star-Lord story ever published. The page features Sandy and Kip Holm being held in bondage by the alien Divac. The page is pure Byrne/Austin artwork as the word balloons for the page must have been done on an overlay, which is not included. Marvel Preview as a black and white, magazine-sized publication, so the original art and the printed are are virtually identical. About Star-Lord Star-Lord AKA Peter Quill was introduced in Marvel Preview #4 (1976). He was a fairly obscure hero for decades, until the last five years in which actor Chris Pratt has played him as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy in four of the biggest movies ever released. Star-Lord is now a character beloved by millions around the globe and will be returning in a few years in the third Guardians film. About the Artists John Byrne is one of the most popular comic book artists of the last 40 years. Byrne first made a name for himself at Marvel working on Iron Fist and Marvel Team-up. He then rose to superstar status working on his historic run on X-Men with writer Chris Claremont and inker Terry Austin in the late 70s and early 80s, Byrne then went on to do great early 80s runs on Fantastic Four and Alpha Flight before famously leaving Marvel to revamp Superman in 1986. A few years later, Byrne would return to Marvel where he produced long runs on titles like Sensational She-Hulk, Namor, Avengers West Coast and X-Men: The Hidden Years. Terry Austin is the multiple award-winning inker best known for his historic run with John Byrne on X-Men in the late 70s and early 80s. He first rose to star status inking Marshall Rogers' pencils on the famous "Essential Batman" run of Detective Comics the artists worked on with writer Steve Englehart in the late 1970s. I wondered who won this page on the last auction. Thanks much for posting this page, Kirk. This Marvel Preview issue started Claremont/Byrne/Austin on their own cosmic run that would continue in the X-Men.
