DescriptionWhen I was 20, I decided to make a bookplate to give people as a Christmas present... one size fits all, people could just write their own names under "Ex Libris" and glue them in their books, I thought. So I drew this thing, xeroxed it and glued four of them on one 8.5 x 11 sheet (the original is 4.25 x 5.5 inches), printed a bunch and cut them up. I gave family and friends... maybe 10 or 20 each (probably in tandem with something present-y that cost money). Everybody had that blank "WTF is this?" look when I gave them out... and this was back when people read books. I don't think even one of the bookplates ever ended up in a book, and I'd be surprised if any weren't thrown out sooner or later. But, I thought it was cool. I dug it out for another purpose and scanned it, so what the hell, here it is. I didn't say it was a good story. Social/Sharing |

Yep, it's a good story. Of course except the "WTF is this?" look... They didn't know the Latin, maybe? Seriously, I would've really liked this present!

I did explain that you paste the bookplates in the inner covers of your books, so that people who borrow them will return them... but they all just looked at me like "We're never gonna do that"!

Yes indeed, very well done ! That would have been a great present, even if you don't understand Latin, hah !

Bookplates are tres cool, it's a shame your gift wasn't appreciated more (or at all, from the sounds of it). I tried to get a comics pro to design a bookplate for me but it was outside his scope of normal commissions so it never happened.

you mean Ex Libris doesn't mean "Ex Library Book"- I thought it was meant to cover up the pocket for the library due date card when it's sold in one of those library sales...
