DescriptionOn the first anniversary of Nick's passing, here's another page from my favorite Teen Titans story, TT 16 "The Dimensional Caper!". For the last issue that Nick penciled and inked, you have to go waaaay back to TT 13 (the Christmas story, see my CAF gallery). The art in TT 13 was great but the story was a little light due to the Christmas theme having a predictably happy ending. However Bob Haney's story in TT 16 has a plot that still sustains interest today. And thankfully, the teenage 1960's lingo is tuned down a lot since the earlier TT stories. I may be biased but I think TT 16's spectacular art exceeds the ability of just about anyone (!!!) drawing comics at that time. There may have been other ways to design this splash but I can't think of a better one. The letterer must have gone crazy with the slanted lettering. At this point, this is one of the few TT stories that started on page 1, instead of having a splash that introduced the story. As has been mentioned in many interviews, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman and even Bernie Wrightson (how many more?) started their DC careers by cutting up original golden age art. In a lot of cases, they cut the pages in between the panels. I'm not sure if this is an example of the practice because not much silver age art suffered the same fate. But this page was cut in 2, between the splash and where the indicia would be. I scanned the art with the 2 pieces side by side. And here's another interesting tidbit, when I received the art, it included the indicia for TT 17. Although the previous owner did not have any art from that book. Weird. And it has those Cardy brick walls that I love so much !!! Robin was created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson. Wonder Girl was created by William Moulton Marston, H.G. Peter and Robert Kanigher. Kid Flash was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino. Aqualad was created by Robert Bernstein and Ramona Fradon. Social/Sharing |

TT#16 is a Silver Age classic, no doubt. And while Nick's art was always good, he seemed particularly inspired by this story. Perfectly sliced page aside, this is a killer splash.
