Description

I was so pleased with the recreation of Green Lantern 4 that Joe Giella did for me that I decided to go back to the well the second time. My first choice was the cove that featured Kid Flash’s transformation into his second and far superior uniform. In fact it is one of my favorite ten uniforms. So then I thought about an issue that featured an oversized grenade that I must have read a dozen times as a kid while my parents spent many a Sunday house hunting. But it did not feature Kid Flash and I really wanted a cover with Wally and Barry. I looked at a number of covers but I kept coming back to two that Carmine and Joe did featuring Wally’s old uniform; the land of the Golden Giants cover and the cover with Wally and Barry racing into the future and the past.

I decided to ask Joe for the future and the past cover but this time reinterpret the uniform so that Wally was in the new uniform and with the revised mask that featured the downward Flash points that Irv Novick introduced into the series for Wally’s cowl. An interesting point when Carmine returned to the Flash book he also returned to his original interpretation of Wally’s mask and did not use Irv’s cowl design based on the bottom half of Barry’s mask.

Needless to say I am delighted with Joe’s reinterpretation of this classic Silver Age cover. It will be framed and hang in a hallway next to my Green Lantern cover, Hal and Barry side by side as they always stood in the Silver Age.

Working with Joe is a true delight, 80 years young and still doing the Mary Worth strip turning out great commission and taking care of his family. Since we have similar backgrounds, phone calls with Joe are a treat and remind me in some ways of conversation I used to have with my late dad. Joe is just a great guy as well as a linchpin of the Silver Age!
