Description

A really nice preliminary drawing for Gil Kane's very first Defenders cover, Marvel Feature 3, and one of his very best covers!!! I love that this is quite a bit more finished than a lot of Kane's preliminary covers with more rendering and details. I also love how this shows the way Kane's choices evolved- it's proof that he was always trying to produce his very best work and not settling for anything less. For example, the experimentation with options for the Hulk's right arm placement, enlarging Dr Strange's head in the foreground even more on the published version, and how he opened up the space around Titan's pointing hand to draw attention to it's shape. The logo was added to replicate the finished cover.

These preliminary sketch by Gil show the genius he was. This one is especially great. The final and respectful inks by Ralph Reese make this one as one of the best Marvel cover ever done. Congratulations Bill !
