SO good!!! I had this cover many years ago and Severin's detailed inks are just beautiful and always loved the Hulk's pose- such a great cover right down to the Stanley matches!!!
Great page- love the 4th panel close-up! I have the page right after this one... such a great issue!
Great page with tremendous action!!! However, this art is from Thor 194 (not 193).
Love everything about this page... especially that first panel!!!
Another BEAUTIFUL Sal Buscema gem for your incredible collection!!! Just love the variety of vantage points and great images of the Hulk in action... and Klaus Janson's embellishments of Sal's pencils are always FANTASTIC!!!
Big John did such an incredible job posing figures and using the figure to create great shapes. The only negative about his amazing career was that he didn't draw the Hulk more often!
Just an awesome splash from the absolute pinnacle of the John Buscema/Joe Sinnott collaboration! How often do you see great images of Thor, Sif, Don and Jane on the same splash, not to mention being signed by both legendary artists? Also love the details and body language of the foreground and background characters... even the hand lettering is great! Love everything about this GREAT splash!!!
LOVE IT!!! Alcala didn't ink Sal's work very often, but they made a great team!
Very interesting- I'm surprised there wasn't at least a penciled panel. Thanks for update, Paul- an excellent page shrouded in mystery!!!
FANTASTIC splash page with great images of two of Marvel's most iconic heroes drawn by the legendary artist, SAL BUSCEMA, who had significant runs depicting both characters! That Hulk transformation sequence is as good as gets!!!
If you put it on a lightbox or hold it up to a light, you can probably get a good idea of what's under there... I'll bet it's awesome!
A great page from one of my favorite FF comics (second to FF 112)! I always loved Big John's Thing, and it's too bad they put a stat over the Thing's head in the first panel- I would loved to have seen what Big John actually drew! The stat is actually Jack Kirby's Thing from the title page of FF #49 (with some of the details whited out)... the difference in style stood out like a sore thumb to me when I was a kid.
SUCH AN AWESOME PAGE!!! I had this one many years ago, and always regretted parting with it. Love the page design and use of solid blacks throughout, and Sal did such a great job depicting the high-flying action!
GREAT PAGE!!! Janson's inks definitely gave Sal's art a much more realistic look. They were a great pairing, but I think Sal's art looked great with most inkers because his draftsmanship and story-telling were so outstanding! I love the variety of panels on this beautiful page... high perspectives, low perspectives, close-ups... and the absence of solid blacks in the force field was extremely effective, differentiating that space from the outside!
AWESOME PAGE!!! Love the variety of vantage points, and that middle tier of panels are killer!
Terrific page from a great comic!!! Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney complimented each other beautifully, and this great page is from one of their best collaborations!
Totally agree with the earlier comment about Sinnott's fanbulous inking over Big John- such a great artistic team! Love the storytelling and great images of the Thing!
LOVE the combination of Andru's fantastic storytelling with Everett's detailed brushwork on this page! Roy Thomas said that Everett disliked Andru sketchy approach to pencilling, so in Marvel Feature 1, he inked every sketchy line just as Andru drew it (Stan Lee was livid). Everett more than made up for it on issue 3, and this incredible page shows just how good the pair could be together!
Sal inking himself in his early years was absolutely fabulous, and I always loved how his punches resulted in bodies flying! AS a bonus, these cavemen are also very reminiscent of his depiction of the Hulk.
WOW!!! What an incredible double page splash- just AMAZING!!!
My favorite part of this great page is the Nixon portrait. Big John captures a great likeness but also does it very consistently with his style (depicting a known person with a Buscema filter).
I remember a guy had all the interior pages and then they were auctioned off. Many turned up again from time to time, but never this one or the splash preceeding it... that explains it! You and I have very similar tastes in art... Looking forward to seeing more of your treasures unveiled, Paul!!!
Just LOVE this page- the best panel page in a historic comic! Saw it available many, many years ago, but hadn't seen it in more than a decade- where the heck did you find it? Such great shots and sequences of Ka-Zar and Man-Thing... and such a great example of Big John's visual storytelling MASTERY!!! Congrats on a great pick-up, Paul!
I'm overdur for another comment on this piece- my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE piece in your amazing collection!!! I love everything about this page- especially that unbelievable Hulk head shot in panel 3 and Sal's dramatic back lighting on the Doctor Strange sequence... SO GOOD!!!!!!
Such an AWESOME PAGE from an absolutely HISTORIC comic!!! Just LOVE the simple panel design featuing a large middle panel and the Hulk images are just fantastic! Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney were just perfect on this comic... their VERY BEST collaboration together with each complimenting each other perfectly!!!
The HULK... the LEADER... the RHINO... Our Pal Sal with Staton inks... great ACTION throughout... everything you'd want in an amazing HULK panel page!!!
Astonishing Tales 12 and 13 was such a great storyline, made extra special by Big John's art (along with an incredible Neal Adams Man-Thing origin sequence in 12 and an assist by Rich Buckler in 13)!
The Surfer, Iron Man, Hercules... the Hulk takes on all comers in this fantastic action page from on of the best comics in Sal's run! Great pick-up, Dave!!!!
Such a great splash from a great comic- LOVE IT!!!!
Thanks, Marcus! Yeah, second to the Wolverine, but most characters would be second to that guy!
CONGRATS on getting another page from your first Hulk comic- and the best one of your group! Love that 4th panel close-up- just GREAT!!!
Just an awesome cover! Big John produced a bunch of Avengers stand-out covers, and this montage was among the best of it's era!
One of Big John's most memorable, and in my humble opinion, very best images!!! With Stan Lee being a master of promotion, the absence of any X-Men might be revealing about how Marvel valued the characters (especially at the time of the relaunch)... same with Warlock, Iron Fist and any others not depicted.
Awesome page!!! Fantastic story-telling, page design and action... just GREAT!!!
Nice bookend to other fantastic 21 page! LOVED the art in this issue!
My FAVORITE piece in your AWESOME collection... just love returning to look at this one again and again!!!
Great page with FANTASTIC Buscema/ Mooney art!!!
Great cover!!! You have such an awesome and wide-ranging collection!!!
No kidding about the subject- have this one hanging behind the basement bathroom door, but it is an awesome painting.
Another great Cooper Studios illustrator- you have some excellent pieces by great illustrators!
Great piece! You don't see too many Al Parker illustrations, and the composition is very effective with the center of interest all contained in the upper right... gets you looking in the same direction as the models.
Really interesting D'Andrea piece- it has some decorative qualities that remind me of his wife's (Lorraine Fox) work.
Great shot of an immeasureably talented artist and a very nice man. He did some drawings for my kids in early 2000's and couldn't have been any nicer!
LOVE this page... and seeing Sal's original pencils in the last panel is just fantastic!!!
GREAT PAGE, Jaume, with such great emotion and storytelling! Outside of Barry Windsor Smith inking himself, Sal Buscema was the next best person inking his work.
