DescriptionA wonderful page from The Kindly Ones featuring Morpheus and Nuala that neatly sums up the entire tragedy. This page is referred to in Frank McConnell's introduction to The Kindly Ones graphic novel ‘In chapter eleven, after he has left the security of the Dreaming, the fairy Nuala, who has summoned him, asks him the question that may be the central secret of the tale. "You...you want them to punish you, don't you? You want to be punished for Orpheus's death." And the next frame, Dream's reponse, is simply a wordless, tight close-up of his tortured face. (that's an effect, by the way, that neither a novel nor a film could achieve with the same force, since a novel would have to describe his face, and a film could only give us an actor trying to imitate that bleak mask of regret. The comic, in Marc Hempel's brilliantly reductive drawing style, gives us the thing itself.’ The page is signed by both Marc Hempel and Richard Case. Social/Sharing |

It was a long journey from the fearful, haughty Dream at the start of Preludes and Nocturnes to the pitiable "man" presented here. It is a classic moment presented with exceptional artistry by all involved.

I remember that 5th panel so well, both for the white eyes and for the words that were spoken. He was basically committing suicide. You want them to punish you... one of the greatest run in comics, ever. One of the best Hempel's page on Sandman you have here, definitely.
