DescriptionFor some folks it's Frazetta, and for others it's John Buscema. But you never forget your first love and for me, Barry Smith and Conan is synonymous. I still have that giant Conan Treasury edition that this piece is featured (just loved the extra "oomph" of those giant pages). This period is Barry's greatest (IMHO), around '74 or '75, as he's transitioning into his Gorblimey Press/Studio years. Been looking for something like this for years, since all this stuff is locked permanently away in a few collections, and I finally got one. I'm one happy comic art geek!UPDATE! Got an email from fellow CAFer Mike Shields who reminds me that this piece was actually first published in Savage Tales #3, February 1974 issue. Dug out my old issue and sure enough, there it was. Thanks for the correction Mike! Social/Sharing |

Looking at Barrys work during this early period I can really see the influence he had on alot of the Image look. Whilce Portacio, Silvestri especially. Jim Lee and Scott Williams as well.

Uhm, yeah, nice...but you don't have any Amazing Fantasy 15 pages.
GAAAAAHHHHH, Scott, another un-freakin'-believable addition to an already amazing gallery! Congrats!!!

They say it takes patience in this hobby.... yes, but sometimes a fast finger on the button is even more valuable. Congrats!

The flaming arrow is headed right for his rock-star haircut... I've never seen bald-Conan before–how much would Barry charge you to do one of those 'one minute later' commissions on this one?

MAN! This is just great!! There is nothing like acquiring a piece of art that has a very strong sentimental value, so I know how you feel. Congrats!!

This is like a Conan heavyweight bout...Down goes Jusko, down goes Jusko! Seriously these two great Conan examples are sensory overload.

Beautiful pickup, buddy, couldn't have found a better home. And I agree, this is my favorite period for Smith too.

This is absolutely gorgeous. Barry Windsor Smith at his peak and one of the most iconic Conan drawings he ever did! Amazing!!!

Oh, damn, what a piece! I spent hours staring at this piece in the Conan Treasury edition, studying every single line, right down to every blade of grass. I, too, love those huge pages. BWS art from this period feels cramped within the pages of regular comics. A true grail piece.

Love the page. I believe the first time this image was used was for the cover of the Detroit Triple Fan Fair Program from 1973.

I'm always impressed as to how effortlessly BWS juxtaposes quiet emotion with fury in his work. The drained face of the damsel; so tired she can't show appreciation for her rescue. The rage of Conan; he battles on despite having a shield burnt to cinders. I remember when this showed up on Clink. By the time the rest of us were feverishly figuring out how to pull together the funds it was gone. Heartiest belated congratulations, Scott.
