I've been looking for an affordable Mutts piece for some time and I got lucky. This piece was auctioned in its pen & ink state as the second item at the Friday night Drink and Draw at Heroes Con 2013. This year the auction raised money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation to find a cure for Parkinson's disease. It was run by Team Cul de Sac.

It was the second item of the night and I think that the crowd was not prepared. Kathy and I fully expected to lose the bidding, but we decided on a limit in the hopes of increasing the amount raised. We were very surprised when we won it for less than our maximum.

As great as the black and white image was we felt that it would fit our house better if it was colored. We approached Laura Martin about coloring it. Laura is one of, if not the best, colorist in comics. She seemed genuinely thrilled and a little nervous about doing it.

What she did was brilliant. We love the way she made it pop and we are especially thrilled with the way she handled the sky. She wrote on her Facebook page, "Mutts by Patrick McDonnell, donated to the charity auction Friday night. I was honored that Alex Johnson asked me to color it." We were thrilled that she did it.
