DescriptionOne of my big purchases of last year.I must confess to being jaded by Skottie Young’s art. The lil’ Marvels approach was fun and fresh at first (even though the Japanese did it decades before with the Chibi or Super Deformed concepts) but much like Suydam’s zombiefied covers, it got a bit repetitive after the first 25 ones. And while I was crazy about his art when he bursted on the scene with the graphiti and hip-hop influences, I find that Skottie’s style got boxed in the exercise from which he’s not trying to stem away from considering how successful it’s been for him. BUT…I will admit that from time to time, all my reserves get blown away by one piece that Skottie produces and with which he strikes pure gold. For me this cover was one of these rare occurrences. This is Young variant cover to the first issue of the much-vaunted run by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I just LOVE this cover. It’s just perfect imho and it perfectly fits in my collection as Black Panther probably remains my favorite Marvel hero. The concept of playing on his feline side by having him attacking a jumping ball of wool like any playful cat would is just pure fun. The fact that Skottie choose to portray him in a somewhat aggressive manner while attacking the ball was the best choice. He is after all a super serious character and that was the best approach even if the piece is intended to be fun. It also enhances the overall humorous aspect of the cover (like Watterson would with Calvin proclaiming he was to go on a serious quest!). So does the two rows of wool line as you deduce from it that the “boing boinging” has been going on for some time 😊 Lastly, the fact that Skottie used part of the wool line to include his signature is a cool bit. Though difficult to see, the title is there in printed blue line. I must not be alone in considering that this cover was vastly successful as it’s already been declined in various mediums. On top of the cover itself, it’s (of course) been produced as an art print by Skottie’s people, but also as a limited pin for SDCC AND a fantastic statue (which I had to own as soon as soon as saw the previews-and did before the cover actually). See the additional images below. It’s also been a long time coming. When Skottie was represented by Felix, I was nervously scrutinizing his social medias whenever an art sale including covers was announced. But it never popped. Then Felix stopped representing him and I crossed it out of my mind, thinking it was either already privately sold, gifted to someone or that Skottie was keeping it for himself. And then it popped years later after release during one of Skottie’s art sales and the stars aligned for me. It was of course one of the most expensive ones due no doubt to the popularity the run it helped launch, that of the movie and sadly due to the passing of its lead actor. Many find that the prices of Skottie’s covers are often inversely proportionate to the amount of inks on the board but it was money well spent as I can predict that this one will remain one of his best. This is part 10 of my 2021 CAF B-day party. Social/Sharing |

I agree: One of Skottie's best and one of my favorites, too. Here's a bit of trivia: I DID have this cover in inventory all those years. But held onto it as Skottie wasn't committed to selling it. I returned it to him when I stopped repping him. And after all this time, it has clearly found its right home. Congrats!

Fred, the reason I really enjoy reading your descriptions and comments is because, like myself, you're honest in your assessment of the art. That stands true again for this piece. The piece is great for all the positive attributes you mention, but there's absolutely nothing wrong in pointing out the fact that this cutesy aspect of Scottie's work ultimately did get tiring after the first 20 or 30 times he did it. The Suydam analogy is also perfect. It is for that same reason that, while I enjoy looking at vintage art featuring characters like Ghost Rider & Punisher, I have no desire to ever read any of their comics. Publishers just don't ever know when it's time to stop beating a dead horse. But as you also say, every once in a while it's nice to see an example of the type of art you're "tired of". Congrats on this!

Big congrats from a fellow Panther fan! I may be a little biased but setting that aside I think this is one of Young's best from this batch of covers. One of the most fun and definitely one of the most clever!

Amazing piece. I agree with your overall view of Skottie's art. This is one of those times where the marriage of comic strip style and comic art style make a perfect marriage.
