DescriptionCollecting Disney Animation Drawings, Part 4Through my friend who once had the 18 scenes of Disney drawings, I was able to make contact with another animator who had two great scenes of Disney drawings as well as many other great pieces of animation art. Up until that time, the only drawings of Chernabog from Fantasia (historically one of the most valued Disney character in art) came out of one scene. I asked my friend who had the scene, and he gave me that person's name and number. I had somehow learned that he didn't sell art but that he would trade. So, when I first called him, I told him what I might be willing to trade for a Chernabog. When we finally met at his place, we got along really well, and we soon became good friends. Although we made some trades at the first meeting, he wouldn't part with his best drawings from the two near complete scenes that he had. I understood, but I was still frustrated. At that point I had become spoiled by usually getting my choice of the best drawings out of scenes. Although I couldn't talk him out of the best, I noted in my mind the drawing numbers on the ones I wanted to own. We met many times over several years, and we traded art on other occasions. The most significant drawing that In traded for was my only inked publicity drawing of Goofy in return for his getting a couple of early original model sheets of the MGM character, Bosco. But I finally was able to purchase the Pinocchio and Chernabog drawings that I had wanted for years, when m, a character he really liked. But one day, my friend had a need for some actual cash, and he was then willing to sell the two drawings I had been wanting. I paid much more than what he had obtained for similar drawings in the past, but I still felt sorry that he was parting with those two treasures under economic pressure. I may be very competitive when it comes to acquiring art, but I hate to feel as though I'm acting like a vulture [although my friend never accused me of that]. Continued... Social/Sharing |
