DescriptionThis is the latest addition to my Avengers sketchbook that I started in 2007. A lot of people have jumped on the Avenegrs band wagon over the past few years with the explosion of the Marvel Movies, but I can proudly say that Avengers was my favorite comic book since I began reading comics in the early 1970's, mainly due to the Amazing artistry of George Perez! Now when I first began reading the Avengers as a child with issue 129 the line up was Thor, Iron Man, Vision, Scarlet With, occasionally Hawkeye and a short stay by Mantis and The Swordsman. Not a Classic Avengers line up by any stretch, but you always remember your first! When it came time to add The Swordsman to my sketchbook my choice of artist for that character was not an instant thought like some of the other "A" list characters. I had first though maybe Mike Zeck since when i looking for reference for the character I noticed he had drawn the Swordsman entry in the Official Marvel Handbook years ago. But alas Mike was not doing con sketches as of late. I tend to call upon contemporary artists for supporting characters in hope that their out of the box styles can add a whole new life to characters that modern reading may not even be aware of. I previously struck gold when I called upon Stephen Segovia to draw Moondragon for my book. She was never one of my favorite characters but after seeing Stephen's rendition she looked like she was ready for her own mini series. Check out his Amazing rendition of Mooney also posted in this gallery! So when I asked Mike Lilly at October's NYCC to tackle the Avenger's man with a sword I knew he would a life that to the character that he had not seen in previous incarnations. I had No idea how blown away I would be by his rendition! I can easily say this is one of my Favorite pieces in my book now! Mike I can not thank you enough for all the time, effort and talent you infused into this piece of art! Social/Sharing |

Woah. I'm unfamilliar with the artist- but this makes me want a commission in the worst way! I thought this might be Texiera from the intensity- cover worthy!

Wonderful. I always felt Swordsman was given a bad deal.
