DescriptionThis was the last of the three initial pieces that I completed for the 60's Covers project a few years back, and the most tricky. The intention in doing these was to recreate each cover as closely as possible in paint (composition, color, dynamics), but in my style. The Buscema and Romita covers were pretty easy, as both draw in a very realistically proportioned style. The Kirby cover, on the other hand presented it's own unique set of challenges. While no one can dispute the dynamics of the composition, or the historical significance of the cover, it really looks like Jack drew it in about 10 minutes. Proportionally, the figures are all over the place, even for Kirby's very stylized approach. Trying to keep that compostion as intact and unaffected as possible, while realistically interpreting the anatomy was a fun problem to solve. I also tried to keep the slightly 'wonky' feel to the figures as much as I could, which is most evident in the Giant-Man figure. The only major change is in the Thor figure, which was just very weak visually. Overall, it may be my favorite of the three because of the challengs and obstacles it threw at me. The painting is 12" x18.5". About two inches were cropped from the top of the image by my scanner. Painting is signed "Jusko -after- Kirby".Social/Sharing |

You nailed it Joe. Most excellent. I especially like the ferociousness of Thor in this one.

Where's the Sub Mariner? You can't have Avengers 4 without Sub Mariner! Awesome job, Joe!

Thanks, Glen!! I didn't want to "box" the Sub-Mariner like he is on the original cover, and Alex Ross did the "superimposed" version (and I certainly didn't want to be accused of copying Alex) so Subby's on hiatus from this version! LOL
