Description

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Carlos Pacheco’s untimely passing. He was a great artist and fantastic storyteller and he remains one of my favorite artists.

I wanted to pay homage to his artistic legacy by posting the last page I bought from his art representant before his passing.

And though Carlos was well known and respected for his storytelling skills, this splash offers a great example of the illustrative side of his art.

The appeal is pretty obvious with a huge shot of Galactus the devourer building his world eating machinery. What I absolutely love about his rendition of the character is that you can detect influences from many of the greats like Kirby (with the odd dotish machinery), Buscema, one of Carlos’s big influences, and even Moebius (with his dead-like face and resultantly ominous stare). Which was Carlos Pacheco for me, a great reverence to the (true) masters that came before him by way of the Spanish/European school of art while remaining entirely his inimitable style.

What I also love is the insane sense of scale that Pacheco subtly infused the page with bis use of backgrounds, especially the nature and of course the tiny Ka-Zar (or is that Kamandi?).

Plus, if you look closely, you can see Galactus somehow grinding his teeth, like the job of building his device is tedious and clearly not his favorite part of feeding even after having done it so many times. (I guess Galactus is not the type to do Ikea Sunday building to relax ^^). Joking apart, it’s a tiny detail that confers a(n even) more dangerous aspect to his god-like aura.

And lastly, as a fan of impossible odds, the before last panel with Ka-Zar pondering his options with a horrified face given, again, the scale of what he is about to endeavour, is fantastic considering he is diving head and knife first at the big guy (only to later become his latest herald in a long list of heralds. But to be honest, and without even addressing the merits of this development, this I only state to-hopefully only slightly-annoy the older and more conservative fans among us who can not face any change in the status quo ^^).

My thanks again to Carlos for the enjoyment his art provided and will provide. May he draw in peace.

Although he was European, Pacheco had what I would describe as a pretty mainstream North American style for the most part. But that being said, as with most artists, he evolved his style of the years and I have to say that this is the first piece of art I have ever seen from him that I immediately look at and think "Wow, such a European influenced style on Galactus.". Really nice work! Oh, and Ka-Zar has been a herald of Galactus? Get off my lawn, you rotten kids!

Ha ha ! :D

I will happily confess I certainly thought of you while writing that part ^^.

But even YOU will admit and be satisfied with the fact that that they did NOT mess with Kazar's sumptuous original "costume" ;p

Ka-Zar wears a costume??? Wait, that loincloth he uses as underwear is a costume? Oh, and I'm completely shocked that today is the 1 year anniversary of Pacheco's passing. Of you had asked me when he had passed away, I would probably have guessed something like 5 to 7 months ago. The older we get, the faster time passes us by!

The scale and the overwhelming odds really comes through in Ka-Zar's face.  The leap into a hopeless cause can be seen as heroically brave or just dumb.

Fantastic splash - so bad Pacheco was doing pencils on separate sheets at that time. Excellent find

The late great Pacheco channels the King while still being all him!  Beautiful, man.  Congrats!

Love the sense of scale and perspective on this.  His passing was such a great loss for comics.

I really like the care given to background in this.  It helps drive and reinforce what the last 2 panels are about.
