DescriptionI never dreamed that this great drawing for the Gulliver Mickey cartoon poster would turn up. There are exceedingly few of these Disney poster drawings still in existence. In 37 years of collecting Disney art, I have only seen 19 original poster drawings which I believe were the final designs for the regularly produced posters for Disney shorts, meaning posters drawn by the staff publicity artists commencing in about January 1934. This is the earliest example I know of within that group of drawings, and, in my opinion, one of the greatest.Collecting Disney Publicity Drawings from 1934-1942, Part 1: One Saturday in July 1979, I was hanging out at Collectors Book Store on Hollywood Blvd. near Highland in Hollywood, CA, where I had been buying Golden and Silver Age comic Books since 1966 and was thumbing through their second issue of their catalogue of items for direct sale from 1975. I came across a page which showed four drawings with Donald Duck from cartoons from 1939 and 1940. I walked over to Howard Lowery, who was managing the original art for sale at the store and asked him if any of the pieces were still for sale. He told me that they all were [perhaps due to their prices between $125 and $175, which might have been too high for Donald Duck drawings in 1975 -- the same catalogue had the original for the first page of the origin story of Iron Man from issue No. 1 for sale at $30]. Howard brought out a loose leaf notebook with sleaves of Disney publicity drawings. I picked out one of Mickey Mouse from Mickey's Man Friday (1935) and bought it for $85. I asked Howard what the drawings were used for and he said that some were probably animation drawings while others were concept or layout drawings. I have no idea why I selected the Mickey's Man Friday drawing, but I recall telling Howard that I liked the small figures better than the significantly larger figures shown in almost all of the other 20-30 drawings in the notebook. He must have thought I was crazy, since the other drawings are, in retrospect, far superior to the one I picked, although they were more expensive. On my next visit to the store, I asked Howard to put a great drawing from Mickey's Elephant ($160) on hold for me, and I ultimately had almost all the drawings in the notebook on hold -- I bought them all over the next several months, with the most expensive one, an inked drawing for the Hockey Champ , costing $250. It had been one of the four that I first saw in the catalogue; I eventually bought them all at somewhat higher amounts than they had been priced four years earlier. None of the drawings were actually animation, concept, or layout drawings but instead they were all publicity drawings done to promote Disney shorts in the 1930s. I thought so highly of these drawings that I started collecting Disney publicity drawings at a time when few people had ever heard of them and very few were collecting them. I have bought almost all the additional publicity drawings that I have found in the nearly 42 years since that day when I first discovered their existence on just another visit to Collectors Book Store. I now know exactly what they were used for and who drew them. Continued... Social/Sharing |

That's pop culture. That's Americana. That's historic. Bravo.
