DescriptionWhat do you think of this? Sometimes something really cool drops into your lap, and that is what happened here. The color guide to X-Men 101 and the first appearance to Phoenix. The art is by Dave Cockrum and Frank Chiaramonte, with colors by the great Bonnie Wilford who colored many marvel books during this period. If the original to this ever came to market it would cost $200k I bet, so being able to have this piece of original colorist art in my collection will have to do since I don't have that kind of cabbage!Social/Sharing |

A lot of people snoot their noses at color guides but I think this a piece they'd all be happy to own if they could. Very nice!

This piece of monumental X history is soo awesome, the Color Guide page is beautiful. Love seeing the process and this art is a piece to a major puzzle. Huge congrats! Great seeing amongst your many X-Men pages.

This is so awesome! I think your estimate of $200K is actually pretty low. Then again... I'm lost when it comes to the price of things these days.

In the heat of the night, I bought a page
Ignorin' words that you displayin'
Tryna change Jean Grey
I said, "This time I've what I love."
What you've called a color guide
That will Phoenix it up
'Cause I'm so glad, I might tell you there's no other
It's when you look at Wilford's color
I said, "Jean", yes all I really want is you
Withstand outside Space Shuttle, readin' Marvels
Screamin', "Now a birth page too!"
Land there in Jamaica bay, comin' back once more
And don't you leave, 'cause I know
All I need is on the color guide, nothing more

Beatutiful piece !! Saw this on the last CAF Update on youtube. I have a few color guides. They're another step in the process of getting those books out. They do have value. It's just a matter of the getting them into the hands of the right people.

Wow, nice work Bill! Great way to grab a piece of comics history. I love a colour guide, espically for an otherwise unatainable original page. Awesome piece.

any thing from this issue is historic. the color guide gives an in depth look to themagic that would become that issue.

Man! That's huge, dude! Key, key moment and hands down my favorite look for Jean. Always loved the flat green vs the gold sheen on the arms and legs. Sublime stuff. And you got those colors here! For the first time! Congrats!

An astounding find!
And those color guide naysayers would each kill for this.
Art is art and that what Bonnie Wilford did here. contributing the final book. And as an artifact from the first appearance of Phoenix, can'tdo much better.

I bought 2 John Byrne Spiderman color guide pages from Anthony when here was here in AZ. I think this is a future market for affordable original pieces and to get an iconic piece like yours here makes it that more special.

One of the most iconic Cockrum X-Men pages ever! Love how Jean Grey's green costume is punctuated by her shock of red hair and how the blue water of Jamaica Bay has a splash of purple in it. Congrats Bill!

Brilliant. But didn't Phoenix first appear in X-men 50?
