Description

Mort Cinder: "La bataille des Thermopyles" page #4
Alberto Breccia & Hector German Oesterheld
Published in Misterix no. 796, February 21, 1964

The Battle of Thermopylae is a extraordinary story by Hector Oesterheld and personally my favorite. Oesterheld tell`s about friendship and freedom. The quality of the drawings is astonishing. Ink, brush and razor. Breccia`a artwork is outstanding. Frank Miller's 300 is pop art compared to this work, 34 years later.

The publication of "Mort Cinder" began in 1962 and lasted until 1964. The Battle of Thermopylae begins (like all the Mort Cinder stories) in the antiques shop of Ezra Winston. The antiquarian and Mort Cinder does observe a vase with scenes from the battle. Mort Cinder suddenly tells Ezra that he was present and took part in the famous battle: "My name was then Dieneces“ and tells about his friend Alpheus, and their leader King Leonidas. Mort begins his tale by recounting the arrival of King Xerxes, the persian king in 480 BC. Xerxes was on his way to conquer athens with an overpowering army. But 300 proud spartans stood in his way at the Thermopylae passageway. Mort Cinder does describe the start of the fighting in the first defence line who decimate the ranks of the Persian king's "immortals". A bloody battle begins and finally ends in treason.

Obviously, this story was the last of the entire Mort Cinder stories. But, .... recently I had the chance to read the real last chapter of MORT CINDER. Again great and thrilling. It was a dramatic episode in the Wild West. Don`t know why, but this last script by Oesterheld wasn`t realised/drawn by Breccia.

Not only are the designs throrough, the camerawork brings you right up to these scenes and turns the mostly dry journalistic recorded history into something that lives and breathes again.
