DescriptionThe first Polaris cover appearance. One of the most iconic Marvel covers in existence, a format pioneered here by Jim Steranko, later to be routinely homaged by other great Marvel artists on subsequent historic covers. Jim Steranko co-created Polaris in X-Men #49, of course. And, as Sean Clarke kindly reminds me in his comment below, Jim hand-drew a brand new logo -- which was used thereafter as Marvel's X-Men cover title, for decades -- directly onto the artboard. My extreme gratitude goes to the previous owner, as well as to my Heritage colleagues Todd Hignite for flawlessly (as always) locating this masterpiece and arranging the transaction, and Joe Maddalena for his brilliant counsel and encouragement. And, of course, to Jim Steranko himself, who was and is a genius, IMO, and a delightful person, too. So proud to have this in my collection, for now. I think it belongs in the Smithsonian. Maybe someday. Social/Sharing |

Absolutely fantastic example from the artist's tiny oeuvre! Congrats on acquiring this one, Jim, just fabulous!

Stunningly adequate... with Jim's hand drawn logo (used thereafter for decades) right on the art!

The Smithsonian remark threw me for a second, as I just assumed you did all your shopping there. But yeah, after seeing this, I get the whole "museum quality" thing. Congratulations sir, this is absolutely stunning!

This does not belong in the Smithsonian. It belongs in the Sullivanonian. I will set up a mini museum. Look forward to its arrival.

1968. The decade was coming to a close and so were the old ways. A year of turmoil and change. The struggle for America to find its soul as civil unrest, the sentiment about war in Vietnam, assassinations of MLK, RFK, Women's Rights, and more led to high anxiety about the future as the world was burning. From this chaos, new voices and new direction were needed throughout all of society. One of the radicals in comics was Steranko who combined design concepts with the dynamic superhero genre to create comics as pop art. It popped because it was innovative and fed off influences from other artforms. This X-Men cover captures the times as there is the swirling uncontrollable energy and flames all about and the ostracised youth in looks on in despair.

Stunning, congrats! It also provides a sense of what Steranko's incredibly staged interiors to these issues might have looked like had they not been (unfortunately) marred by sub-standard inking.

Oh!... The hieratic goddess Polaris and her ecstatic X-Men servants, overwhelmed by the Kirby-Krakle power oozing from her hand... This is all getting too much for my fragile heart...

Still in the small hours of the morning but I'll never get back to sleep now... I'm wide awake from the biggest burst of Kirby Krackle this side of The King. Can I vote now for Favorite Cover of the year?
