1968. The decade was coming to a close and so were the old ways. A year of turmoil and change. The struggle for America to find its soul as civil unrest, the sentiment about war in Vietnam, assassinations of MLK, RFK, Women's Rights, and more led to high anxiety about the future as the world was burning. From this chaos, new voices and new direction were needed throughout all of society. One of the radicals in comics was Steranko who combined design concepts with the dynamic superhero genre to create comics as pop art. It popped because it was innovative and fed off influences from other artforms. This X-Men cover captures the times as there is the swirling uncontrollable energy and flames all about and the ostracised youth in looks on in despair.

Stunning, congrats! It also provides a sense of what Steranko's incredibly staged interiors to these issues might have looked like had they not been (unfortunately) marred by sub-standard inking.
