Description

This page has arrived a few hours earlier. It has been on an over 30 year journey trying to find me and it finally has. I remember coveting this page in a friend's CAF for years and then being the under bidder when it blew away all estimates on eBay a few years ago. Now, through the help of some friends and exceptional camaraderie in the hobby, this page has made its way to my collection. A big thanks to a few Californian collectors who helped make this happen.

Like many of you, I remember Bill Sienkiewicz when he came onto the comic scene and how it took him a year or so to get the confidence to set off on his own path in terms of style and leaving the crutch of being an Adams clone behind. He broke all the rules and conventions and brought comics and fans kicking and screaming into a world that made things like Vertigo comics, Moore, Gaiman, McKean and other innovators possible. I remember clearly how much I loved what Bill did when he started experimenting in Moon Knight and then blew our minds with his work on New Mutants and Elektra Assassin. I also clearly remembering how unpopular he was with the local comic collectors who despised his work while I kept my teenage mouth shut and enjoyed the ride...and what a ride it was. Although the Moon Knight art Bill did was so ahead of its time, it is the New Mutants book that put him front and center in terms of attention and it also the work he is most renowned for and it all started with this book and a story about a girl and bear.

More than 30 years later this page still blows me away but the experience I have gotten from expanding my horizons and exploring comic art all over the world has shown me that Bill brought to North American comics a synergy of a lot of things being done in Italian comics and elsewhere in commercial art. Blending the works of Battaglia, Breccia and Toppi with influence of artists like Bob Peak, David Grove Bill and a pinch of Barron Storey, he crafted a style and look that was uniquely his own but paid tribute to many greats. But for me as uninitiated, it was all new and still captivates me in the way no other comic artist's work has ever done before or since.

The Force is strong on this page and the nostalgia for me is off the charts.

I remember buying this issue, anticipating that, at last, the New Mutants had found their own tempo. And when I read it, I experienced the same thrill I had felt some years ago, when I discovered what Neal Adams had done with the X-men. Same game-changing moment, no turning back... Incidentally, one of the best pages of the run!

Cheers! Bill drawing on all those different artistic influences (at least for us North Americans) and expanding the idea of what an American comic could look like was one of the thrills of reading comics in the early '80s.

This is what collecting is about. Finding art that means so much to you!

And the story behind it to make it happen

Many congrats!

Outstanding!

You wrote well, Jeff.

Bill was inspired by allthose great artists and blended their influences in a personal own style.

I'm booking my ticket plane to Canada right now :-)

Happy for you, my Friend!

Beautiful page from a legendary run. I too was reading this good stuff at the time and was absolutely blown away by Sienkiewicz' work at this stage of his career. His development was an absolute pleasure to watch - to this day, it stands as some of the best and most mature art in the graphic storytelling medium. And it's gone to the right home, as you clearly appreciate it big-time! Thanks for sharing the art and the story - marvellous stuff.
