DescriptionFrom late 1937 into early 1940, many issues of Weird Tales featured a full page illustration by Virgil Finlay based on a poem. Earlier this year, I acquired this one in a trade with a fellow collector. From the June 1938 issue of Weird Tales, this was for "The Skeleton in Armor" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The image was later re-used as the cover for issue #18 of The Magazine of Horror, November 1967. The previous owner didn't care for the blank space at the bottom of the piece, so he had a reproduction of the text that appeared there in Weird Tales laid in.Social/Sharing |

Terrific piece by Finlay! I wonder if this influenced Ray Harryhausen ; )
