Description

I had some art arrived today. I have had 1000's of packages arrive over the years and this is only the second to have significant damage. I have had folds and creases before and some water damage but those are rare. Th one other bad one is already posted in this gallery. Today I add some more art to this gallery of woe. It is here to serve as a reminder of what to do when packaging. I don't mind art being mailed in tubes, i find it very safe as long as the tube is a sturdy mailing tube which this one was not. I also think all art should be in plastic bags so if the package gets wet, the moisture does not get to the art.

You can see the damaged end of the tube here. It is damp and was quite floppy moving with the slightest shake of the tube. There are a few other creases in the tube higher up from other folds. I opened the tube from the dry end hoping the art was on that side but it wasn't. When i tried to open the tube, it was so damp that the tube just peeled away with almost no effort. You can see the art peaking out of the tube in some of the images. Although creased and water damaged, the art did not tear. I am hoping some pressing and drying will help it flatten.

So, just a reminder to be safe out there when shipping. Put the art in plastic so moisture can't get to it. Make sure the package is sturdy so it can't be bent. Lets all do our part to keep art safe.

This stinks! We need to remember that our hobby is based on one a kind items that cannot be replaced and saving some time or a few bucks on shipping is not worth something like this happening!

That's a bummer.

Damn, a real nightmare for any collector! I've had a very similar experience with my naked Vampi by Claudio Aboy: it arrived from France carefully rolled... in a totally crushed tube. Luckily, it's drawn on heavy paper, so I was able to almost completely eliminate the folds. Just hope it's the same in your case!

I'm really sorry to see and read this, Jeff. I also haven't had many pieces damaged, but some of that is due to pure luck. Some things have arrived int the flimsiest of packages and made it through okay. I hope that you'll be able to salvage the art okay.

Never good to see this kind of stuff; great care should always be taken when choosing materials and packing art for shipment. I've had bad experiences with individuals using cheap materials, broken down boxes (folds always represent weakness and should never be over the art), and not protecting the art from the elements. I believe original art shouldn't be rolled, too. But then, I've also had masonite flats arrive broken from impact (though that time the art survived intact; masonite rules!), so handling by the various carriers can be a problem. There are so many bad things that can happen to a package in shipment and the sender should consider them all. Hope you're able to reverse the effects, Jeff.

I had a package arrive that was left out on a loading dock at my local post office in the pouring down rain. They put the package in a plastic bag with an apology. it was originally a box, but in that plastic bag, it looked like a padded envelope! I immediately took the art out and placed it under some flat, heavy... boxes or something and the art was saved. Luckily, the artist used no sharpie or it would have been ruined. You can see the package in my gallery marked "Welcome to my Nightmare". The art is the cover to Supernatural #3 by Ryan Sook and can be seen in the gallery by the same name; "Ryan Sook". Good luck! If my art was saved, hopefully yours can be, too.

This infuriates me to no end. I have a great love for comic art, taking great precautions in preserving it for future generations. There is simply no excuse for this negligence. I'm very sorry this happened.
