DescriptionThis was a pinup drawn during Osamu Tezuka's visit to San Diego in 1980, to promote his anime Phoenix 2772 AD, based on the Hi No Tori series. The inscription says "To Mike Price", and I can only thank Mr. Price for holding on to this piece for me for so many years.I have been in awe of Tezuka's work ever since I read the eight-volume Buddha. Was fortunate enough to see the Tezuka exhibit at San Francisco in June 2007, and I remember walking around the gallery four or five times, in a daze, trying to take in the experience of being in the same room as those breathtaking pages. The prices that his pages sell for in Japanese auctions are comparable to prime Kirby/Romita - even small marker sketches go for humongous amounts. I remember seeing a European collector on CAF with a great interior page, but nothing elsewhere. Getting a painted page by the God of manga is something that fanboy dreams are made up of. I nearly wept when the ebay auction was pulled the first time, thinking someone with deep pockets had made an offer. When it was relisted, I was sure this would be all or nothing - put a maximum bid that would have left me counting pennies for the rest of the year, but got it for far, far less. Thank you, fellow collectors, for realizing this was meant to be in my collection and not bidding on the auction, and thank you to the three people who soothed my concerns and encouraged me every step of the way. If there is one great difference between the great American creators like Kirby and Eisner and their Japanese counterparts, it is the respect, from every strata of society, they receive. And no one (with the possible recent exception of Hayao Miyazaki) is more respected or more influential than Tezuka. His artifacts have come to be treated as national treasures. Statues in his honor dot the various landscapes. Since we've talked about this pinup a great deal before and since the auction, you know how much I love this and that I believe that his art does indeed go in a gallery reserved for "The Masters."

Undoubtly this is one of the rarest pieces in CAF. You don't see out there beautiful paintings from the manga Master Tezuka every day. Satya, you still owe me (and all comic art lovers) a better scan for this GREAT piece of art. This is your year, my friend!

Unbelievable! An original art from Master Tezuka, much more rare than the water in the desert... Congrats and thank you to share it with us!

While I will admit to not knowing much about the world of manga, I always appreciate when a collector is able to acquire something as meaningful as this piece is to you. Very cool piece and great story to go with it...

Tezuka's Buddha series is the most perfect comic I've ever read. It's my desert island comic if I could only have one. Tezuka is revered for good reason. This is a piece I have visited often, but realized I had never left a comment. I am happy you were able to add this to your amazing collection. Besides being an amazing piece of art, it is clear how much you appreciate having it. This art and collector belong together!
