Description

This Jimmy Swinnerton watercolor appeared in the January 1930 issue of Good Housekeeping. The illustration accompanied the first in a series of articles entitled "Bad Boy", by Osa Johnson. Subtitled "The First in a Series of Stories About African Jungle Babies", Ms. Johnson spent two pages writing about baby rhinos, who she dubbed "the Bad Boy of the jungle".

The caption for this illustration reads: "At the water hole with his mother, Bad Boy walked over to a little girl rhino and playfully prodded her with the bump on his nose that would some day be his horn. She bit his ear in return for his playfulness, and the bad jungle babies stood back and glared at each other. Then they decided to be friends."

So, this doesn't have necessarily the deepest plot in the world, but it is a sweet illustration nonetheless. I've long enjoyed the composition of this piece, which has the feel of an Asian brush painting layout to me.

ADDENDUM (9/15/20) - I've finally updated the image with a better quality one. It's shot through the frame, but the colors are more vibrant and more true to the original.
