DescriptionI'm very glad to add this unpublished Sky Patrol daily to the collection. Gordon Campbell was a well known comic strip historian and researcher, on par with Bill Blackbeard. Gordon started out as an artist with the Newspaper Printing Corporation in Tennessee, winding up as an art director along the way. During WWII, Gordon spent a three-year tour of duty as a draftsman with the intelligence section of the Army Air Force in the South Pacific, before returning stateside at the Newspaper Printing Corp. In 1970, Gordon and his wife Mary wrote and published "The Pen, Not the Sword", a 19th century political cartoon history featuring lavishly printed images. In 1974, Gordon and Jim Ivey wrote "Roy Crane's Wash Tubbs: The First Adventure Comic Strip", with a forward by Charles Schulz. This unpublished Sky Patrol is circa the 1930s and is likely a riff on Skyroads, the strip started by Dick Calkins. Gordon was born in circa 1912, so the timing would be right. Mary Campbell passed away in February 2000 and was survived by Gordon, but I've found no record of his passing. I corresponded with Gordon in the 1980s and found him to be generous with his time and research. Social/Sharing |

Always a privilege and pleasure to discover art in your CAF that transcends the more usual (and endless) superhero stuff that's long past its sell-by-date ;)

Great strip that was designed with the purpose to celebrate these pilots and inspire young readers to someday aspire to reach for the skies and seek out this profession. Biplanes are tough to draw especially the undercarriage with the wheels in these angles that make them look like flat discs.
