Description

So ever since reading the JLA graphic novel that Frank Quitely did with Grant Morrison, I've been hooked, and will buy anything the 2 of them work on togother. Love the Superman book, love WE3, and when I saw they were doing a Batman book, well, figured I'd get in on that too. When I saw that Mitch Itkowitz (Graphic Collectibles) had pages for sale, I took a look thru, figuring I'd see something I'd like (that I could afford!). Debated about doing what I did with their Superman book and getting 2 good pages, or just going out and getting one really nice one. So I saw this one, went and got it. A few days later, I went out and bought a copy of the first issue, because I didn't feel like waiting a year or so until the collection to see the page I'd just bought in context. Boy, I'm glad I bought the issue! Not because of the story or art, but because of the great difference between the original version and the published one! As you can see here, the original page makes it very plain that there is a headstone for Bruce Wayne, right next to the twin headstones for his parents on the Wayne family plot at the manor. Well, the version that everyone else saw has a single stone with a large angel statue for Bruce's parents, and a blank headstone with a bat-like shape at the top of it. Mitch informs me (and I guessed the same) that this was probably done at the DC offices, for the original came with no patch from Quitely. It just seemed a curious editorial decision by the DC staff, and I'm wondering whether Morrison or Quitely are aware of it, and what they think. For me, the change seems to lessen the emotional impact of the scene depicting Dick Grayson being driven away from the estate. This is the first Batman book by Morrison I've bought, because I was wary of getting into something that was going to be rooted in continuity, so I don't really know what's happened up until now. I've read things on the internet, and can piece together things from reading this issue, but this change to the page seems a little odd. Now skipping that, I think it's a beautifully pencilled page, with some wonderful detail work on the gravestones, trees, leaves, and everything, and actually has even more of an impact without any dialogue on it at all. Very happy with the purchase, many thanks again to Mitch Itkowitz, and I'm curious to hear what anyone else thinks about the change, and the page itself! I've had this page signed by Quitely in Seattle in March, 2011, and then by Morrison here in Las Vegas at MorrisonCon in September of 2012.

Quitely rocks! One of the most under-rated artist today. Congrats!! BTW=I noticed the change too when I saw it on the site and then in the book.Didn't think to much of it but interesting that they changed it.

Stunning, and yes, I think I prefer the pencils to the inked version too.
