Beautiful page from an important, landmark, and slightly overlooked classic! Congratulations...and maybe I'll be coming to you after you've enjoyed it for a year or two... ;)
Ha! Yeah, I was wondering about that as well. Funny thing is, Klaus was originally supposed to be part of this signing as well. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get to meet Klaus eventually.
Owned this for a few years...a primo example of Zeck & Beatty on Captain America. Congrats!
That's a beautiful piece of art by Frank at a great point in his career...but the story that you tell that goes along with it makes it that much more amazing. Good for you on getting something so obviously meaningful on so many levels. Congrats!
I hate you. ;) Seriously, major congrats on a terrific piece. That Leonardi and Austin team were top notch on that series, so they obviously went even more all-out for the piece to promote the series. Excellent pick-up.
Glad to see it! Thanks for listening. Went right to this when I saw "Paul Smith" and "Howard The Duck", and while that's not the case, anything with the words "Michael Golden" on it is terrific too. Always striving for accuracy, happy to help. :)
Beautiful page! Zeck & Beatty were on fire during this run, and this is a terrific example. Hard to beat this page as a great representation of their tenure. And as for the script, DeMatteis has had many stories over the years that evolved over time, and finally saw the light of day where they were supposed to. Very possible that this was one of them.
I believe someone transposed the numbers on the top. This is NOT Paul Smith. This is NOT from issue 32 of the Howard The Duck comic book. Ink wash pages like this were only in the Howard The Duck Magazine, a black & white magazine-sized publication. This is most likely page 32 of Howard The Duck Magazine issue 9. There were multiple stories in that issue, hence why it also says 'Page 13" at the bottom of the page.
Beautiful page, and I agree with your Paul Smith/Rick Leonardi assessment. P. Craig Russell was a great inker for Leonardi. His style really enhances the look on Colossus in particular. Congrats on a terrific acquisition!
I read the story about this piece in this week's CAF e-mail...you should really post that in the description of the piece. Terrific (yet sad) story, glad you were able to get something like this done.
Hey Joe...just thought I'd stop by to tell you how much I hate you. :)
You're welcome Andrew! Glad it found another home where it will be as loved as it was here. Still a beautiful page on many levels. Enjoy!
It should be mandatory to post some sort of reason or explanation about the page you're posting and why you've got it and/or what it means to you when you put something up on this site. This would be the template we'd all work off of. :)
That's hilarious...I got a Thor With A Beard sketch too...on THE SAME DAY!!! Pretty cool. :)
This is a terrific piece. Love the portrait under the full character. And on that day, DD had his billy club holder on his right hip...therefore you can't see it ;)
Very nice, great piece by a great artist...had he ever even drawn Strange before?
Fantastic story. Love reading things like this. Makes the artwork that much more special. Congrats on getting a beautiful piece with a terrific personal significance!
Great stuff Eric! Love your story of getting this, and really appreciate you sharing the whole unpublished story with us mortals who can't afford gems like this! Good for you on getting this. Congrats!
Beautiful piece representing 2 important creators and eras from the history of comics. The sad part is, one's dead and the other's a recluse. The good part is, their work will always be accessible and will live forever. Major congrats!
Stunner. And thanks for the detailed description to go with it. Love all the input. Great stuff!
I actually prefer this panel, simply because of the more interesting camera angle...but beautiful either way :)
I share your sentiments on this book. I waited years for its arrival after seeing initial glimpses of it in fanzines. As much as I love Dark Knight, I prefer this. I've read DK more, but Miller delves into even more twisted psyches in this book, and conveys it in beautiful, moody, metaphoric imagery. And while my absolute favorite will most likely always be Born Again, with Miller doing both writing and art chores (pencils AND inks, to boot) on this makes ELA a different kind of special. I seriously looked into getting a page from it a little while back, but the wife and I decided to remodel the house instead (I wish I was kidding about that comparison...), so I know what this mean$ to you. Absolutely beautiful page, and you couldn't have gotten a more iconic image from that book, seeing as, as you say, you have the image used to promote the book (I've got one of those posters up somewhere on the walls of our home). Tremendous congrats, enjoy that page for the rest of your life!
Appreciate all your detail as to why you love this piece so much. It is obviously a beautiful piece, and the setting and mood that are conveyed via Wrightson's insanely meticulous line work are the true star of the piece. One can only imagine how many hours Wrightson labored over this particular plate alone. Fantastic pick-up, many congrats!
A real gem of a page from a gem of an issue from a gem of a run! Truly wonderful page. Love the poses, the large scale figures, the zip...everything!
Wow, fantastic piece. Marv in VERY early days, before he became more cartoony. This is really nice, should be held in the high esteem you obviously already do. Congrats!
Great choice for a commission by Leonardi, terrific figures, and the little touch of the clouds gives it a nice sense of depth. Congrats!
Phenomenal piece to have as part of your collection. Any BWS original is fantastic...one from his pre-Raphaelite era, probably even better. Terrific piece, congrats!
Thanks Eric! It may even have been your piece, along with interviews with Kevin, that made me realize HOW much he loves Frankenstein! I always want the artist to WANT to be drawing the piece, not just doing another job...makes a difference. Thanks Eric!
Very nice! I've got a page from the second part of this story (that has some personal meaning to me), but this one is beautiful, with a great set-up to the appearance of a menacing, and wonderfully drawn, Batman in the last panel! Terrific page, congrats!
Absolutely beautiful, Scott! Moebius may not have created Galactus, but he sure did his best to own him in this book. Fantastic work, congrats on an amazing acquisition!
Another beautiful example of Rude's ability to infuse so much life into scenes. Terrific poses on all characters, big and small, great line work, and excellent storytelling. Also love his take on Strange's Greenwich Village mansion! Great page, congrats!
Loved this story by Wagner, and you've got a great example from that book. This probably should've been published in black & white. His command of light and shadow is superb. Congrats!
Beautiful! Rude is a master of filling "small" scenes with grand detail, and all so beautifully crafted. Wonderful page, congrats!
Too cool! Timm's style is perfectly suited for the Silver Surfer! Love the nod to Kirby as well. Great piece!
Terrific page. Beautiful combination of words and pictures to enhance the story and give real depth and meaning to the characters. Wonderful images by Mazzucchelli. A true gem to have, congrats!
In all seriousness, fantastic collection, and beautifully displayed. The best reason to have art is to have it visible for you to enjoy, and for visitors to go "Ooh, aah..."
These are absolutely beautiful. Always thought this series got very overlooked, as there is some stunning artwork here!
Ha! Don't even have a scanner right now at all! I'll see if I can get a better picture up though. Glad you like it!
I seem to recall loving the art in this book also. Now where the hell'd my copy of it go?!?
Beautiful page! Love how Smitty easily conveys the confidence our main characters have by their pose and choice of camera angle. Great storytelling at work in addition to gorgeous drawing. Congrats!
I enjoy the quiet scene-setting moments. They're as vital as anything else. And there's as much drawing ability on display here as on the "big" pages too. I'm happy!
That's probably the reason I bought this page! If you look really closely in that panel, you can see the blue lines going from lower right towards upper left that Smitty used to keep the perspectives in order. That kind of attention to detail I really admire, and it shows a great work ethic and desire to do the job right. And I love looking at a snow covered city, reminding me of why I no longer live in one.
Great page with Raul! Chaykin is a storytelling master, way ahead of his time with this series. You've got a terrific collection of his work!
This would be a fantastic commission idea, if it hadn't already been done as an actual cover! Beautiful piece, Smitty doing his usual bang-up job. Congrats!
Pollard is one of those artists that I have a greater appreciation for when I see the work in pencil format. This is a terrific piece, congrats!
