DescriptionWhen I was 10, I got a copy of "The Great Comic Book Heroes" by Jules Feiffer for Xmas, and it was the first time I ever saw the mysterious Spectre reprinted from All-Star Comics #1 by Siegel & Baily. I was always a Marvel Zombie up to that point, but the Spectre was my introduction to the more macabre and spooky DC characters that included Deadman, Phantom Stranger, & Dr. Fate. I later became obsessed with finding all the Spectre comic appearances from the Silver and Bronze age, and the Adventure run by Fleisher/Aparo was at the top of the list. Finding Aparo Spectre art is exceedingly rare, so this is a precious gem for me.Social/Sharing |

Holy Cow, that is a grail if I ever saw one. Aparo's finest run, IMHO.

Mind blowing! When I see a cover of this quality of art combined with the difficulty in obtaining said art....I have to salute the collector along with the great artist(s).I don't know this story.I always admired great Spectre comic covers but never really followed the stories. However I could see losing my mind and wallet trying to get based on the art alone.Great job!!!

That is so very, very sweet. I fondly remember reading those creepy Aparo stories. They were so darkly brilliant. (And, funny enough, I just re-bought a copy of Feiffer's book at The Beguiling's moving sale. It was the Spectre story *and* the Plastic Man story that made huge impressions on me all those years ago. That book is a treasure.) Congrats again on the cover!

Congrats on the buy. This is such a great cover, like the other Spectre ones, Aparo's work on these is some of the best of the period in my opinion.

Congrats from a fellow Aparo Spectre cover owner albeit one who had to settle for one form a half a decade later.

I do not normally post on DC covers, but this is one great exception. Congratulations on a great acquisition to your collection. I hope to see it in person soon.

Not since Michael Browning posted the Kubert Atom & Hawkman #44 cover in his CAF last year has a single piece of art caused my jaw to drop so low and so resoundingly here. Isn't it ironic that Michael Fleischer was practically run out of town on a rail for this series back in the day because of the protest from fandom en masse about its brutality, but today, so many of us have such fond feelings for it? This is possibly Aparo's BEST cover from the series, since Gwen Sterling is also on it. WOW!!!!

Thanks for pulling this out of whatever black hole it was in. My all-time favorite run. I'll have to settle for just an interior page...Congrats!

Sean, wow, what can we all say? Maybe “we give up” is appropriate! I have been looking for a Spectre cover for what seems like an eternity. Aparo’s pencils during his peak were unparalleled. He is my favorite DC artist of my youth, bar none. As the proud custodian of a complete Spectre story, I can understand the excitement you must be experiencing right now. Congrats on a breathtaking cover by a true master!

A lot of great artists worked on DC's horror stories. But Aparo was definitely the most high profile ones because the Spectre was also one of the superheroes. Just an awesome piece to turn up!!!

Often, when I see a new/older addition to CAF with the number of comments this cover has received/continues to get, I usually just hit the like-button or, if I can't help myself, add a "Sockamagee!"to the accolades as I have nothing new to add. However, even though all I can do is echo the other commenters, Michael Fleisher and Jim Aparo's Spectre run was so special, this deserves a bit more. As for this cover, nobody before or since has been better at capturing the unearthly wrath of the Spectre than Aparo who, clearly was at the very top of his powers when he drew this. Congrats!

Wow! What a jewel of a cover! Gorgeous Spectre image on the cover of Adventure Comics by Jim Aparo! Love this drawing of the Spectre appearing to a hoodlum who's taken a young woman captive. The thug shoots Spectre repeatedly with his machine gun to no avail. He obviously doesn't know that the Spectre is immune to mortal weapons and is bent only on seeking vengeance! Aparo does an amazing job here of making the Spectre appear both frightening and vengeful. I really like the way Aparo drew the hoodlum here too. Aparo is great at drawing faces and clothing. The simplified background works well here, suggesting that in this moment, we are caught in the space between Heaven and Hell. The cover is a classic example of Bronze Age goodness. Great pick-up!
