DescriptionSo, 12 years ago, I purchased a commission of Adam Strange from the great Rick Veitch, who drew the character in my favorite of his Swamp Thing collaborations with Alan Moore. Unfortunately, it was stolen, along with a few other pieces of my art, my entire comics collection (which was subsequently recovered) and lots of other stuff. A few months ago, a page from that Swamp Thing story became available for sale from an original art dealer, so I wrote to inquire about it, asking if the dealer would consider a particular page from my collection to defray part of the cost of purchase. I got a short reply asking what I thought the page I was offering was worth, to which I responded...and I never heard from the dealer again. Subsequent e-mails were never returned. I don't know if I insulted the dealer so horribly that a response couldn't even be dignified or what, but I would've thought at least the face that I'd expressed interest in making a purchase would've merited some kind of counter e-mail or something...But no. Anyway, after feeling foiled for a few days, I decided to skip the middle-man and go right to the source, so I contacted Mr. Veitch again, and asked for a re-creation of my favorite panel from the page. And I could not be happier with what I received than if I had the original itself. I love it. (By the way, as I write this, the original page is still listed for sale on the dealer's website. We coulda worked something out, but oh well...)Social/Sharing |

Glad you could find some deserved satisfaction out of a displeasing situation. Sadly being polite does not seem to be mandatory in our hobby, too often quite the opposite ;)

If you're the type of collector whose idea of "value" goes beyond monetary worth to personal enjoyment, and you're okay with a commission instead of an original, the hobby can still be a blast. For me, having the occasional chance to interact with the artist is amazing. I had a great time chatting with Michael Netzer while he was working on a commission I'd ordered from him, for example!
