Description

�� Modesty Blaise is the heroine of Peter O'Donnell's action/adventure comic strip and prose novels. I love the strip artwork by Jim Holdaway and Romero, but sometimes commission other depictions. This is one of Gene Gonzales' conventionless convention sketches. I use to follow Gene's blogspot and rediscovered him on Patreon this year. I was overdue for a commission and asked for a color piece combining my last two ink requests of Modesty and the Chinese cheongsam. I recall Modesty wearing the fashionable dress in her London apartment in one of the stories. In another story Mister Sun, Modesty used a cheongsam as a disguise. The drug kingpin seeks his revenge on Modesty by holding her friend captive and forcing her to transport drugs from Hong Kong to Viet Nam. When Modesty arrives in a Hong Kong hotel, she disguises herself as a drunken bargirl and gets herself arrested by local police. Once in jail, she reveals herself to a British inspector and plots to foil Mister Sun's scheme. Gene used ink/watercolor/Col-Erase pencil and some acrylic.

That's AWESOME!!! I won't SWEAR to this (because it was almost 15 years ago), but I THINK Gene told me that my sketchbook has his FIRST EVER drawing of Modesty Blaise ... done as a surprise sketch for me. I've told him several times since then how EXPENSIVE that sketch was (he drew it at no charge, but it turned me into a MB fan ... see how many MB strips I have bought since then, plus the cost of every MB graphic novel and first editions of every novel!!!)
