DescriptionThis charcoal, gouache, and pencil painting by Ronnie del Carmen was offered at the Art to Heart: Philippine Typhoon Relief art auction at the 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco on January 16, 2015. I had admired the painting since the online unveiling, but figured I had no shot. Ronnie's paintings have been highly sought at charity auctions in the bay area at Maverix Studios, the Totoro Forest Project, and Cartoon Art Museum fundraisers at Pixar. At the gallery, Ronnie thanked me for coming. I chatted with with his wife Tess. Louie del Carmen arrived from LA and we stared at his brother's art for a bit. At the conclusion of the silent auction portion, eight pieces were selected for live bidding. Art to Heart volunteer Mandy was taking Typhoon Nina off the wall, but it was tied down at the upper corners. I gave her a hand and she thanked me. I replied I was glad for the chance to hold the painting for just a little while. For the Man Arenas Faunicorn, I had to battle another bidder for a few rounds and won. Typhoon Nina was the final item and the auctioneer, Franco Finn of the Golden State Warriors, asked Ronnie to describe the work. Nina is the dream walker from his Paper Biscuit books. Peg is the one-horned flying cat. The colors were taken from the Philippines flag. Ronnie pointed out the folks in the background struggling with their umbrellas. He spent three days before Christmas working on the painting and some time after the holiday. Finally, the auctioneer named the current high bid which was only half of what I expected it would bring. When his call for a new bid went out, I was the only one who raised his hand. After a number of calls for another bid, mine held up. Pixar art director Ricky Nierva, Mandy, and a number of attendees congratulated me. I talked to Ronnie for a bit afterwards, but I think I was a little dazed from the excitement.
