DescriptionI should probably preface this by saying I'm not really an original art collector. This is actually the first page of original art I've bought off another artist, and it couldn't be more fitting that the artist is Whilce Portacio, and the page is from X-Factor #63.When I first started reading US comics I had just got hooked on Jim and Scott's run on Uncanny X-Men, and was looking for something else to read. Nothing else was really grabbing me at the time (from the limited selection at the newsagent) until when, a couple of months after, I came across X-Factor #63. The artwork on the book absolutely floored me, just like Jim and Scott's work had done on the X-Men prior. At the time I had no idea when exactly the next issue of X-Factor was going to arrive, but seeing as how there was no pull list at the newsagent, Whilce had me riding my bike every week for the next four weeks, waiting for that next issue to arrive, 'cause there was no way I was going to miss #64! Later of course, I came to find out Whilce was working in the same studio as Scott and Jim. As I followed their X-work I came to the realisation that I wanted to do what they were doing, drawing comics for a living. It's funny that later on Whilce actually ended up mentoring me, and I got my first professional job drawing for his, and Brian Haberlin's company, Avalon Studios. Even though I wasn't an art collector, I had by chance gotten a free Wolverine sketch off Jim Lee a few years back, which was very cool, but I still wasn't on the lookout to seriously consider buying any original art. That was until just recently, when I saw Whilce was selling some original art pages, and from X-Factor #63 too!... Well considering how instrumental Whilce has been in my career, and how much this issue meant to me, I just had to indulge that kid on the bike one more time. Now I just need something from Scott Williams... heh heh... maybe I am an art collector now. ;) Social/Sharing |

It's always great to get artwork that has a personal meaning. Congratulations on acquiring this one. It's very nice work by Portacio.

Great stories David. We should take that kid on the bike out several times a year and celabrate our youth. It never goes away if you do.
