Description

For comic fans, he was Lex Luthor to Christopher Reeve's Superman. For movie fans, the list of great films and great performances is almost endless. Popeye Doyle in French Connection, Little Bill in Unforgiven, coach Norman Dale in Hoosiers, Capt. Frank Ramsey in Crimson Tide, FBI agent Rupert Anderson in Mississippi Burning, and so many more. Anytime Hackman was on the screen, you were in for a treat. One of the truly great American actors has gone. But he leaves us a magnificent legacy of brilliant, brilliant, work. My condolences to his family, and may he rest in peace.

I should also acknowledge the recent passings of Director David Lynch, singer Roberta Flack and actress Michelle Trachtenberg. All shining lights in their respective crafts that have sadly been extinguished. Our thoughts and prayers to all of their families.

Thanks Marcus.  Yes, of course.  A brilliant career cut way too short.  Not just with franchises like Star Trek and Transformers, but with a TV career going all the way back to Hercules, Xena Princess Warrior, and Alias.  RIP

Theres always a need for black comedy amid lifes horrors and misfortunes. Its the only thing that keeps me slightly sane in a crazy world. Have you looked at some of the things in charge? I call them things,as I cannot consider them human beings of any value. Two more decent humans gone. RIP. I am sure the dog was decent too.

One of my favourite actors. Incredibly versatile. There is definitely some mystery to this. RIP to him, his wife , and their dog.

ONE OF THE GREATEST

Gene Hackman was the quintessential "working actor."  I liken him to Tom Hanks, in that 1) he always seemed like a genuine person who never was tied to anything even resembling a scandal, and 2) any movie in which he played a starring role, I knew I would like it.   In the tribute that they are playing over and over on TV, Hackman said he never thought of himself as a 'movie star.'  That moniker was reserved for actors like Robert Redford and Paul Newman that he tried to emulate when he was a young man.  That kind of humility is so refreshing.   His presence in cinema has been so extensive and all-encompassing that It totally surprised me greatly when I realized that his last movie role was a little over 20 years ago.  I would have said "Oh yeah, I think I saw him in something a few years back."  We'll miss you, Gene, RIP.

I absolutely agree Paul.  Especially with your second point.  But for me, it didn't even have to be a starring role.  Whether it was a supporting role or even just a bit part or cameo, like I said, anytime he was on the screen I knew I was in for a treat.  Whenever we lose one of these great screen legends, I always try to honor and celebrate them by watching one (or two) of their films.  I will probably be doing that tonight, and maybe even for the next few days.  So, so, many brilliant and memorable performances.  Thanks for the comment buddy.  And to Gene, thank you for a lifetime of great movie moments that I will never forget.

I'll second that point you made that whatever role he had in a movie -- starring, supporting, or cameo --- it was always a treat.  Which movies do you think you'll watch first?

Just made a quick pull from my video library.  Not sure which I'll put on first, but this list should take me through the weekend.  Absolute Power, Behind Enemy Lines, Crimson Tide, The Firm, French Connection, Enemy of the State, Get Shorty, Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, No Way Out, The Quick and the Dead, and Unforgiven.

Look at that list !!  All amazing movies!  And that's just a fraction of his complete works.  I am once again in awe of the great Gene Hackman.  Enjoy those cinematic masterpieces, my friend!

Unless I am hallucinating (which may be possible) Enemy of the State is the one where Gene is a crazy cat butler. Will Smith is not very good playing Will Smith in it.

A crazy cat butler?  Man, Hackman could seriously play ANY character!

Ha!  I don't have an issue with Smith's role and performance in the film, but the movie got so much better after Hackman appears.  Unfortunately, that's almost an hour into it.  But as you would expect from Hackman, he made his limited screen time count.  And I don't know anything about any butler, but yes, there's a cat.

Watch it. He has a cat that he seems to think more of than Will Smith.

And don't forget his hilarious uncredited role as the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein 😸Truly a great, genuine and so versatile actor!

As ever, Eric, an eloquent tribute to a colossal talent. A fine early effort and rarely-seen film is Scarecrow which me and my schoolfriends enjoyed and talked about when it was broadcast  for the only time, as far as I can remember, on UK television about 45 years ago. "Bullseye!" And Daggson at last year's Lakes Comic Art Festival reminded attendees that Gene had one of the coolest laughs anyone could ever have.

Thanks for the Scarecrow recommendation Simon.  Will be sure to check it out.

I watched the first two Chris Reeve 'Superman' films just a few days ago, coincidentally, inspired by watching the already award-winining 'Super/Man' documentary about him which recently aired. I probably hadn't seen them for 5 years or more....they remain wonderful and magical entertainment unmatched by any DC movie since. Gene was the quintessential Luthor, Ned beatty great as his sidekick....
