Terror is the Torpedo!
When I finally decided to take the plunge and begin my new The Brave and The Bold That Never Was commission theme last year, I contacted two artists right off the bat. Bob Layton was one of them. A few years back, Bob did an incredible recreation of his cover to Ironman #120 substituting my boy Aquaman for Namor, the Sub-Mariner. I loved it and I warned Bob that I'd be bothering him again one day.
For this faux Brave and Bold cover, I asked Bob to pit the Dark Knight Detective and the Queen of Atlantis against an old Aquaman villain named Torpedo. Torpedo (or Torpedoman) is an obscure foe of the Sea King who only appeared three times, once in Aquaman #36 and twice on Filmation�s Adventures of Aquaman animated series (episode titles: Treacherous is the Torpedoman and The Torp, the Magneto, and the Claw). More importantly for my purposes, Torpedo is an armored evil-doer and we all know about Mr. Layton�s affinity for chrome-clad characters. I thought Torpedo scattering our co-stars by blasting his way through a Gotham City pier or perhaps the Batboat might make for a compelling scene. As you can see, Bob went above and beyond by including both the pier AND the Batboat in this design. He also gave Torpedo�s armor a really cool update and included all the logos and trade dress that one would find on a �79 era B & B. For those who might be interested, that Mera logo is from a back-up series starring the Queen of Atlantis that ran for three issues in Aquaman #58 thru 60. This second commission experience with Bob was as wonderful as my first and I know I�ll be back for more.
