Description

Ed Hannigan is a brilliantly gifted artist responsible for designing and/or drawing hundreds of great covers for Marvel and DC in the 1970s and 80s. For this commission I asked Ed to take his original design for the cover to Batman # 381 (which Rick Hoberg drew the published version of) and substitute the Thing and Spider-Man in place of the two Dark Knights. My memory is a bit hazy, but I am pretty sure that Ed suggested changing the background to situate this encounter in the middle of the Baxter Building. As it turned out, such a scenario matches perfectly with a scene from Marvel Two in One Annual # 2 (by Jim Starlin and Joe Rubinstein) in which Spidey drops in unexpectedly on Ben in the Fantastic Four's headquarters.

Bob McLeod is equally brilliant in his skills with the pen and brush. I was lucky enough to have Bob complete this drawing by adding inks and ink washes.

The final result was better than I could have ever hoped for. Two great artists at the top of their games. This was a very early commission in my collection, but it remains a favorite to this day.

Ed Hannigan completed the pencil portion of this commission in September 2003. Bob McLeod added his ink work in March 2004.
