Description

An incredibly generous gift from my new friend Andy. It was the film Beauty & The Beast that first drew my attention to the name Glen Keane (even though he worked on the previous Disney film Little Mermaid and many other earlier films since joining Disney in 1974). B&B is by far my favorite Disney film and one of my Top 5 films of all time. The more I watched and studied it, the more I had to learn about the people involved in making it. From Directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, to writer Linda Woolverton and Producer Don Hahn, score composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and of course all the animators, beginning with Glen Keane. I knew it was a very special film the very first time I watched it. And when it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, I wasn’t surprised at all. Even though I knew that Academy members would never allow a “cartoon” to win over live action films. If the Best Animated Feature category (which was created in 2002) had been established ten years earlier, I have no doubt B&B would have taken home a Best Picture statue.

Anyway, once I knew the name Glen Keane, it was easy enough to both follow his work and study past works. There was just something about his imagination and creativity, that I really enjoyed. Whether he was animating, writing, producing, or directing, I watched anything with his name on it. But almost 30 years later, B&B remains a clear favorite (with Glen’s Tangled being a not so distant second). So much so that I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched the film (I’ve also seen the live Broadway show four times). Of course I had to go see the recent live action remake, but it just seemed to lack both the excitement of the live Broadway performances, and I ultimately just really missed the animation (which I thought really added to the magic of the original film - along with the phenomenal score, of course). Last, but not least, it was also the last movie I watch with my sister before she passed away.

But yeah, that’s why I’m such a big Glen Keane fan. Something that I just happened to mention to Andy during his first visit to my home to see my art collection. And when he showed up at my doorstep for his second visit, he had these drawings in his hand. Now for years and years, I’ve scoured the internet looking for any Keane drawing for sale. I’ve seen drawings and sketches in other people’s collections, but I have yet to see pieces for sale anywhere. So I know they are near impossible to get (unless you know someone, or know Glen, or know someone who knows Glen). When you spend years looking for something and never finding it, then to have it magically appear at your front door, that’s pretty special. So again, BIG thanks to Andy for this very special set of Glen Keane sketches.

Just a quick note about the sketches. For those of you who noticed Superman’s chest plate on the top left there. Andy told me that for Pocahontas, Glen used the shape of Supes chest plate as reference to help with the character’s face. You can sort of see that with the large face shot to the right of the plate. Quite the interesting bit of Disney trivia.

Absolutely!  There's just something about the way Glen animates that is so full of emotion.  That is what probably sets him apart from the rest for me.  And yes, he's a personal god for me too!  Thanks Fabio!
